Went to Dubuque...saw 3 Whalen signs on HWY 20
Edited on Sun Feb-26-06 07:53 PM by pstans
I went to Dubuque this weekend and saw 3 Mike Whalen signs on Hwy 20. 1 was west of Cedar Falls, the other 2 were east of CF/Waterloo. I also saw some Choose Life signs. I sure hope District 1 doesn't go Regressive again.

1. There aren't too many Whalen signs here
in his home area. I live in Davenport, he's in Bettendorf. His corporation is based here in Davenport and I think I have seen about two or three signs supporting him. No Gluba, Braley, or Dickinson signs at all. I think maybe people are waiting until June to put up signs. Don't despair just yet, Whalen hasn't won a damn thing yet. And while the food is very good, don't eat at any Heart of America restaurants. Whalen owns them.

2. Those went up during his announcement tour, it's not like he's had
growing support. Whalen told one of the Dem candidates that he planned on spending $500,000 of his own money to win the nomination. I say go for it. He's got NADA political judgment!

3. Rumor is that Whalen will have rnc backing
should he get out of the primary. And the DNC is prepared to spend up to around $2,000,000 if need be to support the Democratic candidate. But I wonder if Braley gets the nomination, just how much backing will he get from the national party? They apparently have already thrown Hackett to the curb, although he was running for Senate rather than House. Just askin'.

4. Whoever the nominee is will get the Party backing
But you've got your acronyms mixed up. The NRCC and the DCCC are who fund the congressional races (DNC and RNC are the National Parties).

Also, Hackett dropped out of the race after dismal poll numbers (Howard Dean said what happened with the DSCC was bad, as Hackett says DSCCs upper leaders actually made calls to cut off his fund raising) nobody kicked him out and you are correct, it was a Senate race not a House seat.

I don't think the DCCC is going to mess around in this primary, but they'll be ready to support the nominee - and why would you question Braley's support from the National Party? He's out-raised all the other Democratic candidates, why would the Party bail on him?

6. He had the temerity to come to Jackson County for the
county fair parade and I heckled him. And he seemed to flinch at my shouted remarks as he passed by. No one tried to shut me up either!

8. This is a very blue county
but did give its votes to Nussle because he had a system to reassure senior voters that they would keep getting their SS checks in the mail and whatever few extra pennies he could scrounge up for them but mainly he had an efficient staff that answered questions right away. Harkin could have learned from that but he has always been remote and that's why he has to have a big battle every time he seeks re-election. Nussle WILL reply right away whether you agree with him or not!

5. There've always been anti-choice signs
along 20 east of CR. The closer you get to Dubuque, the more Catholic the general population. I've been seeing those signs there ever since I started regularly driving 20 a few years ago. Don't know anything about the Whalen signs, but the anti-choice signs aren't a recent development.
