Progressive Pages- Need your feedback!
I just visited DancingBear's thread about wanting to come up with a directory of Repuke businesses to boycott and provide decent progressive alternatives for folks.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=2587076&mesg_id=2587076&page=

I'd like to help any way I can to compile this book.

Here's what I need from ya'll:

Give me the names and approximate locations of any local Iowa businesses you saw the last year or so with Bush/Cheney signs outside, behind the counters or in windows. Any "I support President Bush and our troops?" or anything equivalent?

Alternately, provide the names and approximate addresses of progressive or Democratic owned or Democratic-supporting businesses you can recommend instead.

Let us know about good AND bad experiences you've had patronizing good or bad businesses all over the state!

Thanks everybody!
Let's hear em!

1. Article in the Gazette today, "Businesses Advertise Christianity"
Tells about businesses that advertise their Christianity. (Gazette only allows subscribers to read stories on their website) The Christian Business Directories might be a good place to start for places NOT to frequent. The article says they are printed by Barry and Cindy Hultgren's Red Letter publishing of Fort Collins, Colorado. They are apparently available in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area, and Des Moines. This is their website:
http://www.redletter.com/
Not saying all businesses that advertise in here are Bush supporters, but I would be willing to bet the vast majority are.
If your local women's clinic has a newsletter, those businesses that advertise in it are a sure bet to be ones we would want to frequent. The Emma Goldman Clinic has a newsletter, but I don't know when the next one will be available.

4. I'm going to stop by Coral Ridge Mall
And see if that Christian bookstore has the guide. I will then post those businesses of where NOT to shop. But, this is Sunday, and I believe they are closed on Sundays.
Heartland Express is a trucking firm just north of Super Wal Mart.
I didn't know my dentist is a repug. I've been going to him for over 20 years. He should be retiring soon though, and I'm not real fond of his son. Looks like I will be looking for a new dentist soon.

"Birds Eye View" in Coralville is Dem. I know the owner doesn't think much of GW. Plus it's locally owned, and you should feed the birds in the winter anyway, so you might as well get your seed there.

6. Thanks June.
Yeah, I'm hesitant to include Chirstian businesses just because they're in there.

Case in point: I looked at a link the other day that someone posted to some Christian pages, and there was a black Baptist church listed that let Dallas for Kerry do voter registration at their place while they had a huge charity drive to get shots, haircuts, back to school clothes and supplies for poor children.

I wouldn't want to include them in the negatives at ALL. I had a wodnerful day there.

7. Here is the list from the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Xtian Directory
I'll leave out the obvious advertisers like churches and Christian Schools. It's up to the individual to decide if these businesses should be frequented. I looked in the church directory that is included, and neither the Unitarian Universalist nor the Unity Center are included, so my guess is they aren't looking for people that lean left. Anyway, here is the rather lengthy list (I know, what's with all the Chiropractors?):

8. This is good,
but as I said, I'm reluctant to add these companies just because they advertise in the Xtian pages. Some people really DO follow Christ's teachings and DON'T subscribe to the fundie mentality.

If we can get any definite evidence that these folks supported Bush (the fundrace site for example), then we can definitely add em in.
