Chet Culver Endorsed by Planned Parenthood Freedom Fund PAC
Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa's political action committee has endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chet Culver. Jill June, president of Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa, says they'll make a campaign contribution in about a month and try to spread the message about Culver's stand in favor of abortion rights.

"Let's make it perfectly clear today that it matters more than ever who you vote for," June says. "Among the leading candidates today, Chet Culver stands head and shoulders above the rest." June says the state's Planned Parenthood's PAC has never before endorsed a candidate in a gubernatorial primary. "We simply must speak now and we must provide our steady, true, guiding hand to the voters of the state of Iowa so that they understand what's at stake," June says.

June describes Culver as a "clear" and consistent supporter of not only abortion rights, but a backer of ensuring women have access to legal prescription drugs, like the birth control pill or the so-called morning after pill. Culver's rival, State Representative Ed Fallon, also backs abortion rights but another competitor, ex-state economic development director Mike Blouin, is pro-life.

Blouin has pledged not to sign any bill that would enact abortion restrictions. June says that's not good enough. "There's just no wiggle room left anymore in politics on these matters. Women's lives are at stake when their privacy rights to health care are stripped away," June says. "We are looking for a leader and we just can't make do with a follower."

1. This is no big surprise
But it is too bad that they stabbed Ed Fallon in the back. If Ed can pull off his grass roots upset, they will have some major fence mending to do.

2. I don't see how
Fallon refused to take any PAC money. Why would a PAC endorse a candidate that refuses their assistance? It's a little hard for Ed to be pissed that he wasn't offered something he already said he didn't want. This is the problem that keeps coming back to haunt the Fallon campaign.

4. An endorsement is more than money
There are a lot of voters that will see this and vote for Culver. Fallon has the stellar record on choice, Culver has no record, and Judge has a less than stellar record. That is what voters need to know.

5. Fallon has a record
Unfortunately it includes helping to elect GWB by refusing to support Al Gore - the man who would have revolutionized this country in so many ways. Instead he stood with Nader. Nice job, Ed. Hope you are enjoying your choice.

6. Gore won Iowa
Edited on Sun May-07-06 09:27 PM by pstans
I highly doubt a state Rep from Iowa had much sway in Florida in 2000. In fact, Gore won Florida, so I highly doubt that a state rep from Iowa had much sway over how the Supreme Court ruled. Fallon's endorsement of Nader is a non-issue.

11. Fallon's endorsement doesn't matter re who won Iowa. It certainly
can be an issue for a Democrat deciding who to support for the Democratic nominee for Iowa Governor.

It is an issue re Fallon's judgment.

13. I missed your comment, darn it! Did you think I said the opposite of
what I did? It does sound confusing.

I'm not a fan of what Nader did in 2000 - to put it mildly.

14. No, I was welcoming you to the forum and saying I hadn't seen you here
and then realized that we have posted back-and-forth so I felt stupid

I understand what you are saying. Fallon is more independent than some Democrats. That independence can help at times and can hurt at times. It just didn't hurt Gore in 2000 (but it didn't help relations w/in the party in 2000 either). He makes no apologies for who he is. d.

15. I just got polled on the Democratic Governor's race.
Edited on Wed May-17-06 04:53 PM by Pirate Smile
It was rushed, after school, kids yelling, they just asked one question - who do you support: Fallon, Culver, Blouin, Mohamad (sp?). I forgot to ask (I'm not sure if they mentioned it)who was doing the poll.

7. I know Fallon's support of Nader is one of your hot buttons about him
(remembering this from waaaay back at the beginning of the campaign)

But Fallon's support of Nader didn't lose the 2000 election for Gore. Pstans is correct, Gore won Iowa - and with a decent margin I believe.

I agree with you that Party loyalty is important, and it is frustrating that Fallon refused to support the Democratic nominee in 2000. I just don't think his support for Nader made a bit of difference - at least not in Iowa. :hi:

How are you btw? PM me.

d.

9. It didn't cost Gore our electoral vote ...
But it certainly does not help the party. If you are a Democrat then please support the party's candidate. If you want to be a Green or Reformer or whatever, that's fine. Just be honest about the party. Ralph ran a selfish, egotistical campaign and I cannot fathom how a real progressive could have supported him.
