Progressive Pages- Need your feedback!
I just visited DancingBear's thread about wanting to come up with a directory of Repuke businesses to boycott and provide decent progressive alternatives for folks.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=2587076&mesg_id=2587076&page=

I'd like to help any way I can to compile this book.

Here's what I need from ya'll:

Give me the names and approximate locations of any local MA businesses you saw the last year or so with Bush/Cheney signs outside, behind the counters or in windows. Any "I support President Bush and our troops?" or anything equivalent?

Alternately, provide the names and approximate addresses of progressive or Democratic owned or Democratic-supporting businesses you can recommend instead.

Let us know about good AND bad experiences you've had patronizing good or bad businesses all over the state!

Thanks everybody!
Let's hear em!

1. Legal Seafoods.
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 11:28 PM by Cobalt Violet
Owned by a repuke who gave $$$$$$$$$ to Nader.

It is a Massachusetts high end seafood chain, no doubt frequented by liberals.

6. Ugh
They have the worst seafood I've ever had. Repuke or not, I wouldn't want to eat their food and inflict a terrible case of the shits upon myself.

4. Yeah...
I heard the owner or general manager wanted to fly some people out to Ohio to do whatever they needed to to help!

I'm not usually a big sports fan, but I'm a Red Sox fan now!

I really only want to buy "blue" so I really like what your doing.

11. opensecrets.org
I had trouble yesterday as I wanted to post a link, but I go to Who Gives, then Donor Lookup. You can lookup by zip code, state, etc., then you can lookup by recipient.

I tried to do a MA wide search for Bush, Republicans, but kept getting timed out. I'll try again today and see what happens.

15. We've already started the Website.
We're trying to add information to it. We don't want you to go to all the trouble when everything is already set up and waiting for input.

See it here:

Thanks for the info! Please add it in. If you can get their full address, phone number and Website (if they have one), that'll help!

How about fighting this battle on multiple fronts? Its amazing the amount of havock you can reap on a search engine when you have more then on site dedicated to a topic.

How do you think conservatives get their message out? for example, google Pro choice and see how many pro life web sites pop up.

BTW Wal Mart took one in the crotch this weekend!!!!!

As for that crappy Reeper Resteraunt.

16. tell me if this is a bad idea...but why not...
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 12:02 AM by masshole1979
...just take one of those "christian buying guides" where they say which businesses are owned by "christians" (and god knows what that means anymore), and just advise people not to patronize them, because they're engaging in a pogromesque display of discrimination against businesses owned by religious minorities?

Edit: the owners of these businesses are typically contacted in advance and so can opt out of these guides (I'm pretty sure).

17. THANK YOU!!!
I've been thinking along these lines myself for a while.

Instead of just boycotting huge chains, boycott the local mom-and-pop assholes, too.

I know three places I have seen, I just need to drive by and get the exact names and addresses.

Oh, but here's an easy one off the top of my head:
Kirby B J Insurance Agcy Inc
(781) 447-5511
(781) 447-7297
83 S Ave
Whitman, MA 02382

And the Kirby guy came out of retirement to run as a Republican solely so he could fight against gay marriage.

We're definitely boycotting the mom and pops too. I've been busy entering tons of Texas stuff, since I know it the best.

See my link (globalblogs above). We can use all the help we can get on entering this stuff!

23. I've had quite a few people ask me about this.
And I'm reluctant to follow up on it. Unless you want to do a bit more legwork.

For instance: there's a large black Baptist church listed in the Texas one that had a huge event before school started, getting children supplies, haircuts, vaccines, and new clothes. While this was going on, they let our Dallas for Kerry folks set up a voter registration table. This was a wonderful, inspiring day for me. To see how much that church was actually doing for its members and its community.

And I know that pretty much every person in that building supported Kerry.

So some folks actually LIVE by the works of Jesus. Others just use it them peddle hate. The difficult thing is distinguishing the two.

24. Edward "Ned" Kirby- Evil Bastard
Gay-marriage vote sparks fight in state races
http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2004/10/24/gay_marriage_vote_sparks_fight_in_state_races?pg=2

Edward "Ned" Kirby of Whitman, MA is an evil bastard

One of those incumbent is state Representative Kathleen M. Teahan of Whitman, who was out on a Sunday walk not long after the Constitutional Convention when she was stopped on the street by former state lawmaker Edward "Ned" Kirby, a 76-year old Republican who was the Senate's staunchest opponent of gay rights in the 1980s.

"He stopped me on his way home from church to tell me he was running against me because he couldn't stand by and watch me support gay rights," Teahan said.

Now, the gay-marriage issue dominates the race. On Thursday night, Teahan went into a debate broadcast on a local radio station hoping to discuss problems with drinking-water quality in parts of the district, and complaints about the re-opening of a dump. Instead, the entire debate centered on gay marriage.

Mary Alice Kirby, the candidate's wife and campaign manager, said her husband intensely opposes gay marriage, but his main complaint is that Teahan's vote against a proposed constitutional amendment denied voters the chance to decide the issue for themselves at the ballot box. "Ned ended up in it because everyone started calling Kathleen Teahan by the ton, and getting really angry because she was so adamant," she said. "What people wanted was a chance to vote on it. His feeling is that if you allow people to vote on something like this, they will accept it more if it comes through the democratic process."

26. Gee, too bad that the American public wasn't allowed to vote
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 11:28 PM by TaleWgnDg
on ending discrimination against bi-racial marriage (Loving v. Virginia), or ending segregation in public schools (Brown v. Board of Education) . . . etc.

Can you imagine the majority voting for these minority constitutional rights? Is that why for more than 350 years in America these minorities were never granted these constitutional rights? That courts-of-law had to get involved? Golly. I wonder why. Same is true of Goodridge v. (Massachusetts) Department of Public Health, ___ Mass. ____ (2003).

Our constitution guarantees minorities the power not to be trammelled by the majority. Some of these asses need lessons in Constitutional Law!

edited to add: And John Adams, our Founding Father, Revolutionary War patriot, lawyer, statesman, 2d president, 1st vice president, foreign diplomat, author of Treaty of Paris ending Revolutionary War, and author of the world's first constitution, the Massachusetts' constitution which was used as a model for our federal constitution . . . he would be rolling over in his grave if these asses give the majority the option to trammel the rights of the minority thereby planting discrimination in Adams' beloved Massachusetts constitution!!
