Has Anyone Ever Eaten Here?
At the Union Street Oyster Bar in Boston? On election day when all th exit polls were coming out with John Kerry in the lead, my aunt who lives in Beantown got a little over her head and for some reason bought me a T-shirt from that restauraunt. And Iunderstand that it is Kerry's favorite restauraunt and that he eats there every time he is on the ballot.

I was supposed to get it as a Christmas gift, but for some reason she sent it to me now since things didn't exactly turn out the way we wanted it. It is a nice shirt though. It is green with a drawing of the building and a slogan that mentions that this is the oldest restauraunt in America.

Anyway, just kind of strange that I have a T-shirt from a place that I have never visited. But I will be in Boston this summer and was wondering if the Union Street Oyster Bar would be a good place to eat. And yes, it will feel damn good to be in a blue state for a change! ;)

1. By all means, give it a visit.
The Old Union Oyster House is a wonderful restaurant, and the building is steeped in about as much history as any building in the US. I have had several delightful meals there.

6. hey bama
as the summer gets closer, drop me a line (if i haven't been booted). we live about 40 miles north of Boston, nr the border with New Hamster, and y'all are welcome to visit the place where the abolition movement started and all the skull and bones families made their original fortunes running opium... Newburyport, Massachusetts... a really neat place on the ocean...

8. The Union Oyster House is the . . .

oldest restaurant in the U.S.A. and the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the U.S.A. http://www.unionoysterhouse.com/Pages/history.html

Visit President John F. Kennedy's personal booth upstairs at the Union Oyster House. Kerry makes a point to sit in JFK's seat on every election day that Kerry is in . . . he did so this year too. I also highly recommend that you sit downstairs at the bar and eat some raw oysters and/or clams on the 1/2 shell from the "raw bar," all of which overlooks the street and sidewalk as tourists, Bostonians and others walk to and fro along the "Freedom Trail" which passes in front of the bar (very large) window. Ask the bartender some questions about the history of the place. Typically, they love to chat.

Have a great time. "Do" the Freedom Trail, visit Boston's North End, the Paul Revere House, visit the Holocaust exhibits (not too far from the Union Oyster House) . . . Enjoy! And welcome to Boston.

edited to add: In the photo, see the red stripe in the brick walkway? That's the Freedom Trail. The Freedom Trail is a walkway throughout downtown Boston that draws tourists (and others) because along its pathway are many colonial historical including American Revolutionary War sites in Boston. Try it. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Wear comfortable shoes. Boston is a city which is very "walkable."
