Romney gaffe on channel 5 this morning.
About 9AM, channel 5 had Romney on the phone talking about the blizzard and state plans.

The reporter asked (and I paraphrase) "What is going to be done with all the snow in Boston? It can't be dumped into the harbor because of environmental law" (I presume due to the calcuium chloride or other chemicals?).

Romney: It should be brought to Mt. Wachusett for skiing.

Too contaminated for the harbor, but safe for the MDC's Wachusett Reservoir.

What a maroon.

1. LOL ... Moran Mitt
I think it can't be brought to the ocean because it messes up the salinity (sp?) content of the ocean. (See I learned something in Marine Biology)

I know they dump it into the ocean up on the North Shore. :( :grr:

2. Can't dump it into the harbor???
Where do they think all that stuff goes when it melts?

Where does the rain go?

It's not like there's no salt or water in the ocean. Or dogshit, or leaked oil, or asphalt chunks...

3. Yeah...
"1. SITE SELECTION

The key to selecting effective snow disposal sites is to locate them adjacent to or on pervious surfaces in upland areas away from water resources and wells. At these locations, the snow meltwater can filter in to the soil, leaving behind sand and debris which can be removed in the springtime. The following areas should be avoided:

* Avoid dumping of snow into any waterbody, including rivers, the ocean, reservoirs, ponds, or wetlands. In addition to water quality impacts and flooding, snow disposed of in open water can cause navigational hazards when it freezes into ice blocks.
* Do not dump snow within a Zone II or Interim Wellhead Protection Area (IWPA) of a public water supply well or within 75 feet of a private well, where road salt may contaminate water supplies.
* Avoid dumping snow on DEP-designated high and medium-yield aquifers where it may contaminate groundwater (see the next page for information on ordering maps from MassGIS showing the locations of aquifers, Zone II's, and IWPAs in your community)..." more...
