Cantabrigians are questioning why a gay-themed billboard was abruptly taken down after three complaint-free months.

The ad promoting the Web site gay.com featured two shirtless men wrapped in an American flag. It appeared atop the Cambridgeport Saloon in Central Square in April, sparking little more than double-takes.

But after an anti-gay group lodged complaints, the billboard was swiftly replaced by a recruiting ad for the United States Navy.

"Having it replaced by {an ad} that was endorsing such a homophobic organization, that was particularly troubling," said Lee, who is a member of the city's new Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Commission.

Clear Channel, the media conglomerate which owns the billboard, began fielding complaints last Wednesday after anti-homosexual activist Brian Camenker {Article8.org} spotlighted the ad on his group's Web site. Only hours later, the billboard company announced the ad would be taken down one day earlier than originally scheduled.

1. Ironic, isn't it?
The "message" on the Navy billboard - "FREEDOM".

Freedom of what? To be shot down for actually believing you might exercise a freedom?

3. lol -- freedom of speech?
i always get a bang out of people who think we live in a place where you have that right -- i generally stay out of those debates -- but this is a pretty good ''in your face'' example.
