US SENATOR BARACK OBAMA THROWS SUPPORT BEHIND DEVAL PATRICK’S CAMPAIGN FOR GOVERNOR

09/26/2005

Says Patrick’s run similar to his own historic Senate race; holding an October fundraiser for Patrick in Chicago

September 26: Senator Barack Obama, whose historic run in 2002 electrified US electoral politics, is heavily supporting Deval Patrick’s run for the Governor’s office in Massachusetts. At several events in the past weeks, Obama celebrated Patrick’s effort and compared his own surprising victory as the US’s only African American Senator to the journey Patrick is taking. This Sunday, Obama is hosting a major fundraiser for Patrick in Chicago.

“When I announced that I was running for the United States Senate, it was generally greeted with skepticism. People said, “Well he’s definitely the best candidate. We think he’d probably be the best US Senator. But let’s face it, there’s no way that a black guy from the South Side named Barack Obama can win a statewide race in a state like Illinois,” recalled Obama at a recent gathering of Harvard Law School alumni.

He continued, “It’s worth mentioning that there’s another Harvard Law School Graduate here in the State of Massachusetts who people are saying would be a pretty good Governor. But, everybody is saying, “Well I’m not sure he can win.” And I just want to make note of the fact that Deval Patrick is in the house…Deval’s in the house.”

Obama met and became friends with Patrick during Patrick’s stint as the head of the Justice Department Civil Rights Division in the Clinton Administration. Obama was then a practicing lawyer in Chicago. Both attended Harvard Law School and continued that friendship through Obama’s historic run in 2002.

In addition to his recent supportive comments Obama recently hosted Patrick at Congressional Black Caucus weekend in Washington – an event that featured appearances by Senator John Kerry, DNC Chair Howard Dean, and civil rights luminaries such as Harry Bellefonte and Dr. Joseph Lowery.

1. Please Mass Democrats -- U N C O N T E S T E D PRIMARY
Lets all say it together. You are the best Dems around for the longest period but no massive multi player primary, just Deval and a couple of vanity candidates.

He looks soooooo gooooooood!!!!!!

2. It wouldn't be Massachusetts if we had uncontested primaries
How else would we learn the fine skill of beating each others brains in and making it difficult to win a general election in the state. Heck, next you'll be telling me that maybe we ought to hold the primaries before Sept, so that we have more than 8 weeks to unify behind a candidate and bury the bloody hatchets.

Then you'll be telling me that we have to do away with 'Unity Breakfasts,' wherein you break bread with people who were trying to politically kill you mere hours before. Hell, why don't we just change the name of the Commonwealth to 'Kumbaya' and be done with it.

Hell, if you can't take the heat, move to New Hampshire already.

4. I'm hot enough already. Thanks for the education.
Good thing you guys have a big majority, you'd be it trouble all the time. Here in VA, we have a Dem governor at 70% approval, and a tight race with a good candidate (Warner can't suceed himself). Our structural factors are just fine, it's a judgment problem here. Oh, the Republican is a real nightmare, an embarassment to the state if elected.
Go figure.

5. Why won't Warner run for the Senate?
He could take that idiot Allen out. I like Warner, but he is a one-term Gov. He should run for the Senate.

And why does VA limit it's Govs to one term? That seems a bit harsh and dumb.
