In a frantic effort to appease its right wing base, President Bush has withdrawn Harriet Miers's nomination to the Supreme Court. The White House pretends its reluctance to provide privileged documents about her work was the cause of the withdrawal, but the real reason was obviously the right wing mutiny over the nomination.
Parts of Ms. Miers's record showed a personal commitment to the basic constitutional rights and liberties that promote the best of America. But whenever these views surfaced, the outcry of GOP loyalists grew louder, and the President couldn't take the heat.
The withdrawal is particularly ominous because it suggests that President Bush will now turn in desperation to a nominee who will pass the litmus test of the radical right.
Hopefully, he won't yield to that shameful pressure again. By honoring the voices of all Americans - not just his radical base - he can choose a mainstream nominee who will unite the country, not divide it.
At critical moments like this, we need you to be more involved than ever in insisting that the White House act in the best interest of the nation.
Now is no time to rest. Now is the time to intensify our involvement - and do our best to take back Congress in the 2006 election. Only by doing so can we end the reign of this GOP Congress that rubber stamps whatever extreme policies the White House proposes to placate its right wing base.
Best Regards,
Senator Ted Kennedy
