Poll question: Who do you want for MA Dem Senate nominee when Kerry wins?
I'm surprised noones started a poll yet for this. These seem to be about the most likely nominees. I think alot of people might initially favor Meehan or Markey at the outset just because they're the biggest media grabbers of late of the bunch but I would caution against both when given other options. Markey was apparently one of the people involved in the FCC crackdown witchhunt to raise the broadcasting fines and what not. He's also done other things that have irked me and he doens't even live in Massachusetts. He's just got a mailbox essentially at his childhood home and he lives in Maryland. You might not care, but the voters will, and apparently the GOP nominee, Martin, isn't a pushover.

As far as Meehan goes, he bugs me even more. The guy is making it really obvious that while the issue he's been championing in the senate, body armor and armor for hummers, is very important, that he's milking the hell out of it for political gain. For example one of the many impromtu pressconferences he's had on the subject was outside a Massachusetts soldiers funeral that he attended. Unseemly seems like an understatement. He also if I remember correctly tried to form some "god caucus" or something to oppose secularists during the pledge of alleigance controversy.

I really think people should take a look at Delahunt. He's in the most republican district in the state, and he's an expert on both foreign affairs and law and order/crime issues (he used to the Quincy DA). My support is for him if he runs. Hopefully he and other people who might draw the same votes in a primary as him such as Reich and Frank won't also run, having the same effect as Tolman and Reich had on eachother in the 02 gubinatorial primary cancelling each other out and allowing shitty Milquetoast Shannon O'Brien to be nominated.

Anywho...

2. Please check out Tierney's record
this guy is phenomenal. He's the rep for my district and he took time to personally help my family in a private matter, not to mention that he voted against the Patriot Act, against the IWR, and pretty much has one of the most liberal voting records in the house. On top of all of this he is simply a fantastic guy. If he decides to run fo the Senate I will be tripling my volunteer time to get this guy elected.

3. Delahunt
Agree he is great (fyi he was Norfolk County DA, not Quincy DA)

Also, you left out McGovern- who was mentored by Joe Moakley. I really like McGovern the best.

I am not crazy about Markey. I think Markey has a huge leg up. He is Kerry's co-chair in MA, and has been appearing at the events for Kerry in MA.

On the republican side, Ralph Martin would be a very tough candidate to beat, I think. I also think Cellucci might want to run -- and the darkhorse - Andy Card. Don't forget about Andy Card.

4. Celluci I believe ruled it out. Or one of his reps did.
Apparently it's Martin's.

I read all the articles I could find on the senate scramble and it didn't appear McGovern was interested. He wasn't raising money like the others.

19. The real information is not always in the articles....
seriously, I agree that McGovern is not running, but rather deferring to Markey and Meenan and others.

I don't believe Cellucci for one second. Andy Card was a state rep or senator years ago, and has alot of friends in MA at all levels, don't rule him out.

8. I'd like Barney Frank too
Many people have called him the smartest man in the House, and based on my personal encounters with him, I'd fully agree.

But unfortunately, with the gay marriage thing causing such a fucked up commotion, I'd question his ability to win the election, as I'd fear it'd become a referendum on that. If this were back in 2002, when this wasn't an issue, it wouldn't be a factor, but right now, it is.

9. Barney Frank
is in the pocket of the RIAA (record industry association of america), the MPAA (motion picture association of america) and the BSA(business software alliance). These people are taking away our rights as it pertains to copyrights on a daily basis and using their money to sue into submission anyone who disagrees, they are also criminalizing copyright infringement to a degree never seen before.

while I like Frank in general, he is not the best candidate for the job. That is Tierney.

Meehan sucks ass though. Lazy bastard. Only Neal is worse in Massachusetts (which, fairly enough, isn't saying a lot because we have an amazing delegation).

18. 1996 telecommunications act
my only knowledge of markey was his strong support for the 1996 telecommunications act ... the act stripped local communities of many of their local zoning rights especially with regard to the placement of cell towers ...

seems like this was yet another giveaway to corporations over the rights of citizens ...

but i'll keep an open mind about him ... that's all i'm really familiar with ...

24. careful about "giving up" McGovern . . .
because the potential candidate to fill his position in the Worcester area congressional district is none other than that idiot ex-Georgia representative who pushes his own extremist religion into laws . . . you know the guy . . . Ronald A. Crews (do a google on this reactionary sob). . . .

Rumor has it that that "cute guy" in the Governor's Office is going to "back" Crews. "Birds of a feather," as the saying goes.

and I'd hate to lose Delahunt. I worry that seat will go to some Republican punk Mitt convinces to move down here to the Cape.

I like Joe Kennedy myself.

I checked out his website. Like we really need a PR executive representing us in Congress.

It's not like we don't have Republicans on the South Shore, the Cape and the Islands -- can't Mitt find a homegrown one to run?

14. The republican, Martin--
Is that the man who was a prosecuter/DA in Mass several years back? If he's the repub candidate, that could be trouble. If I recall, I liked that guy for some reason (though I don't remember why), and if I liked a repub, he could be a condendah. And the repubs would certainly milk the fact that he's African-American. And of course, knowing the loyalty of the repubs to their party, he'd move to the right once elected.

22. Can't decide
between Reich and Frank...both extremely able men in every way.
Barney wants it bad though...if he can get the details in allignment.
Reich...I've heard is still hoping for the Gubernatorial nomination..but he'd make a kick ass senator in every way.

I am primarily a Joe Kennedy mark...but I earnestly hope he can still claim the Governorship when the time comes...if he can raise 20 million and is prepared to go all out then fall Mitt!

25. the best person to fill Kerry's slot in the Senate?
No problem. It's hands down. Unanimous. Barney Frank. Why? Barney is brilliant. What an intellect. Seriously. He's a walking encyclopedia. So much so that he is an expert on the House of Representatives parliamentary procedures. And that's no small task!!

On top of that, Barney has an acute, clear, crisp sense of humor. And uses it in his own wry manner to soften the blow when countering an attack. Brilliant guy.

He was tops in his law school as well a few years back.

The sole drawback is that there would be NO FILLING HIS SLOT in the House, period. No one can reach his brilliance. Research his record.

27. and one last note . . .
if it were Barney Frank filling the U.S. Senate position that Kerry would vacate . . . Frank's congressional district would undoubtedly STAY W/I the Dem Party. Why? Are you kidding? No way would that congressional district go Republican. NO WAY! After Father Drinan, then Barney? It's always been one of the most liberal areas in Massachusetts and will remain so. No matter what the hell that "cute guy" in the Governor's chair put forth as a Republican candidate.
