St. Paul Classic
I received my flyer today for the St. Paul Classic Bike ride on September 11. It's a good ride for an old-timer.

1. I'm Game!

This ride is ON the 4th Anniversary of 9-11. If we coulde get enough Minnesota DUes to ride as a group, perhaps we could come up something?

6. I would do it (at least the 15 mile)
I'm totally out of shape, but I could probably get enough stamina together for 15 miles. And by then, I may even be living in St. Paul, too!

:D

3. They sure are. And they even get a cheaper rate.
It's $25 for adults and $10 for kids 5-16 if you register by July 31. Kids under 5 ride for free. And you can save $2 per person if you register as a group or family of 4. Heh, if we want to register as a group I can think of a few group names we could use but I'm not sure they'd let us in. ;) Here's the link if you need more info on the ride.

Not sure yet if I'll be doing this one. For weekend riding, I usualy like to either hit a dirt trail that I don't have time to drive to during the week or just do a long road ride. Let's see...if I ride to the ride start, that would turn the 30-miler into a 60-miler for the round trip so that might actually work out OK. Hmmm...maybe I will do this one.

7. I think I'll order
a DU T-shirt before the ride.

It's kind of difficult to ride as a large group because different people like different paces but as small groups it's really fun. I'm just a couple years short of 70 and almost 40 pounds overweight so I'm not a really fast rider.

I do like this ride, though. There are only two big hills. There are three rest stops with music and food (four if you count the start/finish stop at St. Thomas). It's really scenic, too.

And it takes you past the school where I attended kindergarden in 1942. I'll be happy to point out the room.

12. Unfortunately, I have to spend time this weekend helping
my mother and stepfather pack up to move into an assisted living apartment.

But have fun, the rest of you! :hi:

BTW, Bob, do you have any relatives who were affected by the hurricane?

13. Only material stuff.
A family home in Metairie that I believe is now gone.
My younger brother, who was living there, evacuated and is OK, but it will be a long time before anyone can get back in to check the property.
But our losses are nothing compared to the people still trapped in that HELL.

It breaks my heart.
I cannot even look at the pictures any longer.
New Orleans was my home, and in spite of all the warts, I loved the mystery, romance, food, and traditions of Old New Orleans.

Thanks for asking.

16. Wow. Good to hear that your brother got out OK. That's the most
important thing. Sorry about the loss of the family home though. So many have lost so much but you're right -- those trapped in that hell for so many days suffered the most. And it was all completely unnecessary.

I didn't know you were from NO or I would have offered my condolences right away. And I know what you mean about not being able to look at the pictures. I've been following the whole thing on TV and the Internet and I'm getting to the point where I have to turn away and do something else to try to take my mind off it. If I'm feeling that way, I can't imagine how the survivors feel. They can't turn away from it because everywhere they look, there are constant reminders. It's just bad all around but way the survivors have been treated is unconscionable. Heads need to roll for this.

Sorry. Didn't mean to hijack the thread. We now return to the regularly scheduled programming.

Thanks for supporting the Neighborhood Energy Consortium at the Saint Paul Classic Bike Tour!

Thanks for supporting the Neighborhood Energy Consortium at the Saint Paul Classic Bike Tour!

In 2004, over 7,500 people registered to ride and over 300 people volunteered, making the Saint Paul Classic the largest biking event in Minnesota and one of the ten largest in the nation.

This is a non-competitive, go-at-your-own-pace tour. For many of the riders, this is their first tour.

Ramsey Hill, on the short route, is quite steep and many folks will need to walk their bikes up. On the long route, there are three moderate uphill climbs.

The tour will take place rain or shine.

Check-in begins at 7 a.m. at the University of St. Thomas on the corner of Cretin and Summit Avenues. The ride begins around 7:30 a.m. Riders must be on the route by 9:15 a.m. and finish the route by 1:15

Over 30 miles of the two routes will be closed to cars. This includes most of the 30-mile Saint Paul Grand Round and about ten miles of the 15-mile Summit Avenue loop. Roads closed to motorized traffic will include Mississippi River Blvd., Shepard and Warner Roads, Mounds Blvd. and Ramsey Hill.

I'm SURE you will need a certified HELMUT!
