MN DUers: How about a picnic supper on Friday, August 12?
At Minnehaha Falls?

Who can RSVP "yes"?

Should we assign different people to buy the foods and drinks and charge everyone their share? Should it be potluck?

What say ye all?

2. I'm there.
Official RSVP for Fri Aug 12.

I was in some low grass a little farther downriver last week about an hour before sunset and was swarmed by mosquitos, so we might need to take precautions.

3. I haven't been there for a picnic in years
Can you roast marshmallows? Drink beer?

4. Yes to the 12th.
Potluck sounds good for sides. How about if people bring their own drinks of choice and meat if they want to barbecue something?

Last time I was there beer was permissible.

5. Oh, I didn't see this one
That sounds like fun. They have picnic tables there I assume? It's against the law to drink beer in a city park, in St Paul anyway.

7. As the RSVPs start rolling in, let's discuss how to proceed
Katinmn has suggested that we each bring our own beverages and meat/alternative substance to barbecue, and that makes sense, but what about the other accoutrements of a picnic meal?

Should each responder volunteer to take charge of one aspect of The Compleat PIcnique Feaste? Otherwise, we may end up with eight bags of potato chips.

Plates, drinking vessels, napkins, and tableware

Buns for the barbecued items

Baked beans and/or cole slaw or some other dish containing vegetables

A fruit salad

Fixings for s'mores (graham crackers, marshmallows, and Hershey bars)

And yes, someone gets to bring munchies (I am especially fond of Oregon-made Kettle Chips, but that's just me)

I'll start off by offering to bring a simple fruit salad.

Next? Have I forgotten anything important?

8. Good list
I'll bring some cole slaw or potatoe salad and we'll keep it in a cooler so we don't get sick!

I'll bring one bag of charcoal. Think that will be enough?

9. Charcoal! Thank you!
Otherwise we'll be eating raw meat, and that's not good for one's health either.

Unless we're roasting whole oxen or something, one bag of charcoal should be enough.

10. paper or lighter fluid
(I prefer paper -- no aftertaste)

I think I can handle the plates, utensils, cups & so forth. Just let me know how much (many) to bring.

27. Yes, what time?
I can come and will bring some food. I've seen lots of folks picnicking in city parks with wine bottles, though I have never seen a keg or open display of beer.

32. Picnic/Pavilian area
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 01:29 PM by katinmn
I called and they won't let you reserve seating in the Pavilion (first come-first serve) but it holds 500 people. I'm sure we can use a couple of the many tables unless there happens to be a biker's rally taking place.

If the bikers are there, perhaps we can get free beer!

No one mentioned bikers, I just recall that they rally in all the Mpls parks from time to time.

42. Took my brother from out of town yesterday the 6th
It was flowing really good. Looking good and cooler down below. We capped the day with Mega Mall and ride on the light rail to the Twins game. Ninth inning win. A good time was had by all.
Pavillion would be fine, but don't know about the beer thing. I don't know the best place to park, but the green field at the bottom would be neat. Lot of steps though that may be a hindrance.
Count the Demonfighter and Mrs. Demonfighter in. Possibly another 1 or 2 if Sweet Mary or Susan (unnamed) come along. They're Demonfighter-in-laws.

Thanks Lydia for the heads up. Susan recently attended a WAMM meeting with Lila Lipscomb and she's pumped to attend a DU event. :bounce:

38. GAspnes already beat me on offering to bring the
plates, etc. That's usually my potluck contribution, unless I make pumpkin bars...But I'll probably be coming straight from the office so I'm having trouble thinking of something I can leave in the car all day without it getting ruined (and possibly poisonous). What nonperishable items do we still need?
