Poll question: Do you want taxpayer money to pay for any part of a new stadium? * |
|
* Poll only valid if ALL Minnesotans respond.
If you are for taxpayer money being spent in this way, please say why. I'm a little biased toward "no", you see...

Spending taxpayer money on healthcare and education. Oh man, that's hilarious! ROFL! What is ya, some Pinko Commie Librul? ;)
I definitely agree with you that that's where the taxpayer money should go but I'm afraid it's not going to happen under Timmy's reign. Oh, and the poor will probably need more money for heating assistance this winter so I'd throw add that in too. I'm sure there are other things we can add to the list also but a stadium is not one of them. Let the rich get their handouts from someone else.

but we already had this discussion. Go back and look at the threads on the Twins stadium to see why I and a few others support this. I'll add that I'm much less supportive of a stadium for the Vikings since the Metrodome is a fine stadium to watch football in, and economic disparity is not as significant in the NFL as it is in major league baseball. The Metrodome was built for football and is not a nice place for baseball.

9. My brother made these points today: |
|
1) The Twins wanted the Metrodome so that their games wouldn't get rained out. They won a World Series in it.
2) The Vikings wanted the Metrodome so that they wouldn't have to shovel snow off the playing field or freeze their butts off during playoff season.
3) The Gophers wanted to play in the Metrodome so that they could impress prospective recruits.
Now, just 23 years later, it's supposedly not good enough for any of them.
Well, too bad. We can't keep our libraries open or fund a decent transit system, and I'd rather pay double or triple taxes for those purposes than pay one cent to the billionaire owners and their pampered gladiators.

The Twins won TWO World Series in the Dome.
The other is, the Vikings are the ones who really wanted that stadium. The Twins wanted a new one, but were never happy with the Dome which really was built for the Vikings. Being a baseball fan I have more sympathy with the Twins wanting a different stadium - it is lousy for baseball. However, I do not support using tax money for it. I especially hate the current plan in which they'd build the new Twins stadium "roof ready" - which means if and when they do put a retractable roof on it, it will cost more than if they build it with a roof. Or, they'll discover that there's some reason a roof can't be added and they'll be whining for another new stadium in a couple years.
I have a sinking feeling we'll get stuck paying for the damn thing. If we do, I just hope they build it right this time. I can't imagine how unpleasant games might be in April or May without a roof. I don't think it would help attendence much.
The Vikings and the Gophers get no sympathy from me. The Dome is exactly what both those teams wanted. And for the University to expect us to pay for a stadium when they're raising tuition every year is insane. If the U wants more money from the taxpayers, they better use it to keep tuition down.

then it surely could work here, and then the stock holders can pay for the new stadium and the rest of us working stiffs who pay taxes can support education, mass transit, the environment, social justice

I'm old enough to remember the days before the Twin Cities had any pro sports.
The public schools were excellent, the bus system was excellent, the libraries were open six days a week, the then-Minnapolis Symphony already had a national reputation, you could work your way through the U on a minimum wage job, nobody even dreamed of selling off park land to make money, and the crime rate was low.
There's a lot more to "quality of life" than pro sports.
If we're going to tax the general public, I'd much rather use the money to bring public services back up to 1950s quality, not subsidizing a private business owned by billionaires.

16. Only the ones who want to watch a team in a new stadium should |
|
be taxed. On tickets, on "memorabilia" on drinks and food consumed in adjacent restaurants and bars, even on commercials shown during games.

Hartman is the biggest liar in politics outside of the White House. On several occasions he has said that if the Twins don't get a new stadium at taxpayer expense, the Major League owners will buy out the team and move it elsewhere.
Recently however, Pawlenty debunked that idea by saying that no such threat has been made and he said it on Hartman's show. Naturally, Hartman did not reply to this truthful revelation.

Please cast a spell on Sid Hartman so that the next time he talks about wasting more taxpayer money on a new stadium, he'll get the mother of all laryngitis cases.

21. Majority Says: NO NEW STADIUM! |

Majority oppose St. Paul ballpark
BY JASON HOPPIN
Pioneer Press
If St. Paul taxpayers aren't showing up at City Hall with pitchforks and torches, there's a reason — they seem quite content.
A Pioneer Press poll conducted last week found city voters overwhelmingly pleased with the services they get for their tax dollars, satisfied with the direction of the city's public schools and comfortable with their safety.
But the Minnesota Twins can stay right where they are, thank you very much.
"For the public to build the stadium just might be unwarranted when there's so many other demands on our dollar," said Ralph Hilgendorf, 72, a resident of the Hamline-Midway neighborhood.
