Target Corporation won't commit to filling valid medical prescriptions!
A friend of mine wrote to ask Target Corporation to commit to filling valid medical prescriptions for contraception, and they refused. They are not willing to commit to such a promise. Instead, they are passing the buck- helping customers find another pharmacy which will fill their prescriptions. How convenient! My friend already transfered all prescriptions to Costco. Following is the letter my friend received:

Dear Target Guest,

Target places a high priority on our role as a community pharmacy and our obligation to meet the needs of the patients we serve. We expect all our team members, including our pharmacists, to provide respectful service to our guests, particularly when it comes to their health care needs.

Like many other retailers, Target has a policy that ensures a guest’s prescription for emergency contraception is filled, whether at Target or at a different pharmacy, in a timely and respectful manner. This policy meets the health care needs of our guests while respecting the diversity of our team members.

Your thoughts help us learn more about what our guests expect, so I’ll be sure to share your feedback with our pharmacy executives.

Thanks for taking the time to share your questions, thoughts and comments. I hope we’ll see you again soon at Target.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Hanson

1. This isn't good news.
Yeah, I read about this on another blog.

http://americablog.blogspot.com/2005/10/targets-ceo-is-massive-republican.html

I was also surprised to see that Amy Klobuchar had received money from the CEO Target. Since Amy is endorsed by Emily's list, do any of you think that she should give the money back until Target changes its policies?

4. Maybe Amy doesn't even know about this
And she should be told in no uncertain terms that Target's rapidly going to the other side.

17. 'community' is lip service to target.
And as they have clout, we are expendable.

5. Let me rewrite their policy for them
Diversity, bullshit. Are they going to allow pharmacists decide to not fill antibiotics because they think the person really only has a virus? No, this is sexism, plain and simple.

How about something like this:

"Target places a high priority on our role as a community pharmacy and our obligation to meet the needs of the patients we serve. We pledge to ensure that a guest’s prescription for emergency contraception is filled. If your local Target pharmacy will not fill it, we will show support for both our customers and the diversity of our team members by REIMBURSING YOU IN FULL for the cost to have it filled at another pharmacy."

Now, if I saw that, I'd believe they were standing by their all-important principles.

Fight this, people!!

6. Ya gotta wonder if one of their cashiers
had moral objections to ringing up condoms or bikinis if they's back him or her up.

7. Planned Parenthood has launched a letter writing campaign
This a nationwide policy. The sample letter references a pharmacy in MO.

Contact Target and insist that every woman's pills be filled — now!

Target has ignored three attempts by Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) to determine their national policy regarding pharmacists' refusal to fill valid, legal prescriptions for birth control, including emergency contraception. But they cannot ignore hundreds of thousands of potential customers.

Pharmacies must ensure that women get their prescriptions filled in-store, without discrimination or delay! Contact Target now.

10. I wonder what Libertarians think on this.
Love them or hate them they could be good allies in the fight.

Would they side with the pharmacist not wanting to violate their own beliefs, or would they side with the right of the consumer?

What if they always had at least one pharmacist on to fill prescriptions? It is not at all "pc" because they people are working certain hours based on religion.

This is a difficult questions that will someday land in the Supreme Court "again?" I am sure.

12. ?
I got this from another thread and it says that the Dayton family founded Target:

http://www.removerepublicans.com/markdayton.html

Isn't this news inconsistent with what the Daytons stand for?

13. The Dayton family did found Target
but I don't think any members of the family are active in the corporation anymore.

BTW - I sent an irate email to Target this weekend on this very subject and how their attitude had caused me to decide not to fill my brand new Fosamx prescription at any of their stores - not that that amount of money will hurt them.
