Urge Mark Dayton to filibuster Alito nomination
Tell Mark to Veto Alito! Dayton is in a unique position to do so as a Democratic senator not up for reelection. He has nothing to lose, and he'd be a hero to millions of Americans for standing up to these Constitutional thugs. This could be Dayton's legacy in what has been a respectable but relatively undistinguished term as senator. He would long be remembered as "that Senator from Minnesota who stood up to the complete takeover of the third branch of government by an extremist and out-of-control Republican regime."

Tell Mark Dayton to summon up all the anger he can at this nomination. Let it rip like when he was campaigning on the Iron Range and was accused of wanting to take sportsmen's guns. That's the kind of outrage we need right now before we're mugged of our Constitutional rights in the dark alley of BushCo.

Call him at 888-224-9043.

2. Kick this up
CNN has it that Kerry is going to filibuster. We need all the support we can muster because frankly we are running out of time.

4. I e-mailed him a few days ago.
And I got a pretty non-committal response:

"Thank you for contacting me regarding the nomination of Judge Samuel A.
Alito, Jr., of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit,
to serve as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United
States.

President Bush nominated Judge Alito to fill the vacancy created by
retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, after the President withdrew the
nomination of Harriet E. Miers, the White House Counsel, for the Supreme
Court on October 27, 2005. The Senate Judiciary Committee is currently
holding hearings on Judge Alito's nomination.

As with the case of any Supreme Court nomination, I am withholding my
judgment of Judge Alito until I have had the opportunity to review his
record thoroughly. Please be assured that Judge Alito will receive fair
consideration from me.

Thank you again for contacting me. I will keep your views in mind during
the Supreme Court nomination process of Judge Alito."

Bleh. Maybe some more e-mails and phone calls are in order?

5. I just emailed him tonight
and had trouble with the senate web site. I received a message that it was experiencing technical difficulties. I kept trying and finally got in - I wonder if we're overloading it.

I reminded Mark that at the Wellstone Memorial Tom Harkin told us to stand up and keep fighting - and this is his chance to do just that. I understand he will make his decision know tomorrow.

6. I called his D.C. office early this afternoon,
according to the staff person I spoke with, he hasn't made a decision.

I wasn't terribly eloquent, unfortunately. I basically said, "PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! For the sake of the future of our country and our Constitution, PLEASE support the filibuster!"

I sure hope all you other MN DUers call him too. Use the toll free numbers: 888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641 -- when the operator answers, just ask for Senator Dayton's office.
