Patty Wetterling rumored to be thinking of taking on Mark Kennedy
in this year's House race. I heard this on Wendy Wolfe's show (1330) about 5:45 this evening. No other details were given.

...kidnapped so many years ago and never found? Wasn't his name Jacob?

3. Patty Wetterling would be a fantastic replacement for MK - a breath
of fresh air, for sure! Plus, she has been an activist for many years due to Jacob's abduction and has a wide network of friends and grassroot support.

I heard another rumor about Mark Kennedy - that he will try to unseat Sen. Dayton. How wonderful if we could get MK out of the House with Patty's help and out of politics totally by slapping him down in a race against Mark Dayton.

4. But Kennedy is going to run against Dayton
And Kiffmeyer is going to defend Kennedy's seat.

So the rumor mill goes.

7. that won't be until 2006
Screech is going to have a harder time mounting a campaign against Dayton if he's shown the door after just one term.

5. Looks like the decision has been made
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Patty Wetterling, who transformed anguish over her son's 1989 abduction into a pioneering crusade for child safety, has decided to challenge Rep. Mark Kennedy, R-Minn., for his U.S. House seat.

Wetterling, 54, of St. Joseph, Minn., plans to formally announce her candidacy on Wednesday or Thursday, two Democrats familiar with her plans said Monday.

"Yes, I believe I'm going to run," Wetterling said in a phone interview. "... I thought about it a lot, and I believe it is the logical step for me to continue doing the work I've been doing."

Wetterling has widespread name recognition and could capitalize on the fundraising connections that she and her husband developed.

-snip-

Two experts in congressional politics rated her a long shot in an era when 99 percent of incumbents win reelection.

"Here's the harsh reality," said University of Minnesota political science Prof. Lawrence Jacobs. "She's a sympathy candidate running against an incumbent."

Wetterling's entry into the race in the heavily Catholic, Republican-leaning Sixth District, however, could create the only serious contest when Minnesota's eight House members seek reelection this fall.

Democrats began to recruit her shortly after Stillwater lawyer Janet Robert, who spent about $2 million in a failed attempt to oust Kennedy in 2002, decided 11 days ago to drop plans to seek the DFL endorsement for a rematch.

11. And you can bet your sweet bippy that the repukes will say vile untruths
Typical repuke M.O.

She should run. I hope she does. Heaven forbid, an honest person taking interest in politics. I'd vote for her in an attosecond.

12. You're right, they'll dig up some nasty stuff
There were vicious, unture rumors that Jacob's disappearance was due to the parents involvement in some whacky religious (Scientology?) sect and numerous other tales. I'm sure these horrible rumors will be trotted out again.
