While the rest of the country watched only President Bush and John Kerry debate Friday night, a crowd of 7,000 at Williams Arena got to see a three-way confrontation: Bush, Kerry and controversial filmmaker Michael Moore.
Moore, the director of the anti-Bush film "Fahrenheit 9/11," had planned to give a speech as part of his "Slacker Uprising Tour," his personal campaign to get traditional nonvoters to the polls. But when he realized that he was scheduled to speak at the University of Minnesota at the same time as the presidential debate, he changed course. He invited the audience to watch the debate with him on four giant-screen TVs while he gave a running commentary.
"It's to honor the Minnesota tradition of 'Mystery Science 3000,' " he said, a reference to the locally produced cable TV show in which commentators made sarcastic remarks while showing old B-movies.
Filmmaker Michael Moore spoke at Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota on Friday night.
He also said he was breaking from form in making his first donation to "any political candidate from any party. I have never written a check to either party, the Republicans or the Democrats, until tonight."
