St. Paul soldier killed in Iraq

A St. Paul soldier has died in Baghdad, the Defense Department said today.

Spc. Jacob J. Fairbanks, 22, died Wednesday of "injuries suffered in a non-combat related incident," the department said in a news release.

Fairbanks was assigned at Fort Campbell, Ky., to the 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

The incident is under investigation, the department said.

A total of 73 people with strong Minnesota ties have died in connection with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
