Miles Lord's daughter to challenge Franken in Sept primary

An attorney from a well-known family in Minnesota legal circles says she will challenge Senate candidate Al Franken in a Democratic primary.

Priscilla Lord Faris says she will file the paperwork to run in the September primary.

Lord Faris is the daughter of retired federal judge Miles Lord, who remains active in DFL politics. She is managing partner of a personal injury law firm.

Lord Faris says she has given money to Franken but isn't persuaded he can take the seat away from Sen. Norm Coleman, the Republican incumbent. She says a primary campaign will sharpen the Democratic candidates and give Coleman a tougher challenge in November.

*****

So, Faris, how is challenging Franken going to help him take away the seat from Coleman when he now has to divide his time and money campaigning against Coleman to campaign against you? Thanks for nothing.

1. miles lord was a great judge and I approved of almost all...
of his decisions. But he retired from the federal bench to make money. That was very disappointing.

4. He's Nearly 90
I don't know a lot about his daughter but I do now Miles is a good guy and has actively supported the DFL. I'm not sure what is disappointing about him leaving the bench and going to work. He served his time and probably was about 65 or so when he retired. If the old coot wants to work, let him.

As for his daughter I welcome anyone who wants to run in the primary. I like Al and will vote for him but does it bother anyone else that he is a carpetbagger who left Minnesota to go to college and didn't return for 30 years. He should be running in NY, not here.

8. And Al moved back here a couple years ago
and "paid some dues" by doing a lot of work for other DFL candidates.

Miles Lord was a wonderful judge - I hated to see him retire.

20. I encountered him a couple of times, long ago in my former career.
And while I agreed in principle with many of his decisions, I also found him to be kind of an egomaniac. Didn't like the guy much at all.

2. It will be interesting to see where she gets her money from for this
Hopefully, Franken will be able to ignore her and just keep running against Coleman. Has anyone every heard of her before? Has she been especially active with the DFL?

3. We should have the DFL primary to choose the Senate candidate...
...before the DFL convention, instead of after.

5. If we had closed primaries.
The Republicans don't have any serious primaries this year so they'll be free to come over and help select the DFL candidate.

16. Unless there are DFLers who have primaries and will need your vote
Even without party registration, you have to vote only for candidates of one party in the primary. If you vote for a Republican in one race and a DFLer in another, the ballot is invalid (again, this is only in the primary).

(And isn't Bachmann's opponent a bit saner than Michelle (which doesn't take much)? You don't want to vote for the Republican that might be harder to beat.

9. So run on the name "Priscilla Faris" and see how far you get
Yawn. Trading on daddy's name. If an entertainer with a nationally known name of his own can't win, what makes this nobody think she can? Where has she been the past two years? Can one person here on DU honestly say they EVER heard of her before?

12. Not Worried About It
I'm a Franken volunteer and supporter, and I am not one bit worried about this. I think Al will get in, regardless of what tactics they have planned at the GOP Convention, , or any new comers to the election. I think it's rather late for anybody new to think that they really, seriously even stand a chance. If they were so damn serious to start with, they should have gotten their asses in the game sooner. Just my opinion, folks.

19. Farheen Helping Faris?
http://mississippifarian.wordpress.com/2008/08/11/bespredel/

"I’m hearing rumors that she’s being courted to see if she might deliver some votes in the upcoming DFL primary.

And no, those votes wouldn’t be going to Al Franken, the guy the MN peace movement loves to hate."
