State court rejects GOP challenge on precinct judges
The Minnesota Supreme Court ordered Ramsey County officials to correct "minor imbalances" among election judges in eight St. Paul precincts on Wednesday, but it rejected all other demands in a Republican Party petition filed on the eve of Tuesday's election.
"We are compelled to emphasize that petitioners do not allege, and there is no evidence of, fraud, malfeasance or other wrongdoing in the appointment of election judges in any jurisdiction," Chief Justice Kathleen Blatz wrote for the court.
On Election Day, thousands of election judges, many of them longtime veterans of the job, will rule on voter eligibility and assist in ballot counting at polling places across Minnesota.
The GOP had sought public disclosure of the judges' party affiliations to ensure compliance with a state law requiring that no more than half of the judges in any precinct come from the same major political party.
