City designates Bible Week
Declaration questioned by leaders of many faiths
BY LAURA YUEN
Pioneer Press

Should city councils be endorsing the Bible?

Without debate or fanfare, Apple Valley recently joined about 400 other U.S. cities that declared this week as Bible Week, an annual observance that promotes Bible-reading and recognizes the Scriptures' "unique place in American life."
-snip-
But the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas called Bible Week "entirely inappropriate." Hassan Mohamud, imam of the Al-Taqwa Islamic Center of St. Paul, agreed that the resolution appears to disrespect people of other faith — and those who have no religion at all.

It's cool to trash the Constitution now. We got us a mandate now.

6. Doesn't Apple Valley have a fundamentalist high school?
I know it has a lot of fundamentalist churches. Could we be seeing the result of stealth fundie candidates in local governments?

Of course, maybe actually reading the Bible instead of just listening to their preachers might be an educational experience for some of these people.

10. How about this?
Read the entire bible, cover to cover. It'll open a lot of eyes.

No, you can't whitewash over the last chapter of Judges where a woman was shoved outside into a hostile crowd of slobbering perverts despite being a guest in a culture where you are never to harm a guest. Or some of the prophets being told to eat dung. The prophet negotiated with God and it was amended to be cow dung rather than human dung. Or the beginning of Job where all the devil did was ask a question. Job's suffering was done with God's express permission and approval. Or the part in Kings where the whole of Israel was punished because David spared someone's life. (Thou shalt not kill, anyone?)

You also get the part where Jesus hung out with the dregs of society, preaching that they were just as good as the rest of us, where he tossed out the moneylenders.

I remember being told by a religion teacher in HS that the Catholic church discouraged reading the bible cover to cover. Of course I had to do just that.

I found it very interesting which rules were tossed out and which rules were still enforced. (see Leviticus)

7. Let's all get in on this!
Get the Jews, Muslims, Jehovah's Witnesses (so many black people--"Shriek!" go the rightards!), Wiccans, and every other religion you can think of, out there and joining in with all this Bible-thumping crapola. Hey, religion is religion, let's celebrate 'em all! Lots of black people and Jews, that'll really freak out the right-wing KKKristians. Yee-hah!

8. On the bright side
only one other Minnesota town, N. St. Paul, fell for this exclusionary pronouncement.

"For some reason, Minnesota comes up a little short," said Tamara Collins, the association's vice president for programs.

I hope next year participation drops off even further.

9. "For some reason"
Ha ha. Yeah, a little bit of REASON will always mess up religion.

12. I thought EVERY week was bible week with them!
Why stop at one week a year? Let's just make bible reading mandatory for everyone every day! Every time I think they have gone too far, they go a little farther. This is disgusting. What is it going to take to stop these people?
