Published November 22, 2004

At least five people were killed and three wounded in a multiple shooting in northwestern Wisconsin Sunday afternoon.

The dead include four men and one woman, according to broadcast reports.

Chai Soua Vang, 36, was arrested early Sunday evening in Sawyer County, Wis., said Sawyer County Sheriff's Deputy Jake Hodgkinson. Vang lives on St. Paul's East Side, police spokesman Paul Schnell said. He was held in the Sawyer County Jail.

Sawyer County Chief Deputy Tim Ziegle told KSTP-TV, Channel 5, that a man dressed in hunting clothes was occupying a tree stand on private property near Birchwood, Wis., around noon Sunday.

1. This Was Horrific!
I couldn't believe what I was hearing! I worry all the time about someone trespassing on our property during hunting season! I never take a walk, even down the road, during this time.

Here's the link to the video:

3. I wonder when he got his assault rifle
before or after the lifting of the BAN!

He wasn't hunting with it (because you can't obviously) but he went home and got it. Nice.

4. No assault weapon here...
It wasn't an assault rifle, it had never been banned by either the state or the feds and it was perfectly legal to hunt with...that's the scary part.

10. No, 20-round non-removable internal magazine - Not illegal
Any rifle with a fixed magazine would never have fit the definition of "assault weapon" under the now-expired federal law.

The standard SKS comes with a fixed 10-round magazine. 20-round replacements are common accessories. Installing them involves driving a couple of pins out and back in.

7. yes, it was an assault weapon
It's been widely reported. I've seen it numerous places.
Here's one article: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/23/national/23gun.html

By FOX BUTTERFIELD
Published: November 23, 2004

The rifle that killed five Wisconsin hunters and wounded three more on Sunday was an SKS 7.62-millimeter semiautomatic assault weapon not normally used in hunting animals.

11. The reporter was mistaken, SKS did not fit definition of AW
Here is a link ot the actual code. Keep in mind that the definition of "assault weapon" and all the laws, rules, and regulations that flow from it are no longer in effect.

Go to http://www.gpoaccess.gov/uscode/ - search for "semiautomatic assault weapon" including quotes. Follow the link to Section 921 and read.

To qualify as an AW a rifle had to take detachable magazines. The SKS has a fixed magazine.

was watching krap 11 they described the weapon as a "hunting rifle, then not two sentences later saying it had a "military clip". Bastard cowards were too afraid to call it an assault rifle, which is what it is. chicken shits.

About the rifle

NEWS TRIBUNE
The rifle that authorities say Chai Vang had in his possession when arrested is known as an SKS semiautomatic assault rifle.

Because it's relatively inexpensive, light and has a mild recoil, the weapon is popular with new hunters and those with smaller statures, said Tim Lawhern of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

12. who cares if it was an assault rifle..
It's really irrelevant what kind of definition/label one wishes to attach to the rifle. To Simonov and the Russian military it was an assault rifle, so what.

He could've bought a bolt action from Wal Mart (or at any gun show, with even less hassle), with a much more powerful caliber and longer range and done even more damage.

Some folks have no business owning any weapons, period.
That was the case with this idiot.

Also, for the record, I think it's a shame that hordes of cowardly rednecks are still allowed to stalk, harass, and kill innocent, defenseless animals for fun. It should be made a CRIME.
