Bush Administration Breaks Silence to Back Annan
Thu Dec 9, 7:32 PM ET By Evelyn Leopold

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The Bush administration expressed confidence in U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) on Thursday and said he should stay in office, in a belated rebuff to demands from Republicans in Congress for his resignation.

U.S. Ambassador John Danforth called reporters together to deliver the comments, saying that he had to clarify the U.S. position after his colleagues and the media believed the United States government was not supporting Annan.

"We are expressing confidence in the secretary-general and his continuing in office," Danforth said, adding that he was speaking for the White House and State Department.

"No one to my knowledge has cast doubt on the personal integrity of the secretary-general. No one," he said.

U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman, a Minnesota Republican, who was later joined by five congressmen, last week called for the resignation of Annan, who has two more years in office before completing his second five-year term. more...

7. What's happened in this country since 2002
would cause Wellstone to spin fast enough to generate electrical current sufficient to power a nuclear particle accelerator.

4. How lovely it is to see Normie embarrassed.
Edited on Fri Dec-10-04 12:19 AM by ocelot
Norm embarrasses himself every time he gets up in the morning. I do think it odd, though, that the Reich isn't backing him up on an official basis, since Normie was hand-picked by Dick Frankencheney to run for the Senate against Wellstone. Norm has been kissing ass all over D.C., shamelessly currying favor with his GOP masters. Did they pull the rug out from under him? If so, why? Or did Danforth pull the rug out from under the anti-Annan contingent? Stay tuned. I'd love to see Coleman, who is a grotesque blot on my state's progressive reputation, make an irretrievable ass of himself such that he ends up toiling in the bowels of the Senate's most obscure and unprestigious committees. I can't stand that little weasel.

8. I heard an interview with Coleman on MPR this early evening
And... He flip-flopped! He was using words like Annan should "recluse" himself from any investigation that, should, happen because these UN slip-ups, while Annan was presiding over the UN, have been the reason WE, THE US, had to go into IRAQ to take out Saddam! That's why we're in Iraq!!! I had to turn it off when some woman caller, currently in law school, oozed support for his brave position. She said there were many in her school with him too - because - Annan can't be impartial during the impending, and needed, inquiry. He responded enthusiastically to that caller - chirping about how any lawyer would understand that!

I hate this man.

I think that Coleman was used by the administration as a canary to check out the possibilities. And the administration seems to be backing off of this one. Maybe the many brushfires cropping up right now, who knows.

After watching the Bushies in action for 4 years, their pattern of operation is quite clear. Good catch.

15. taking one for the Administration
Rove called in his marker (clearing Pawlenty out of the Senate primary) and Norm stood up, opened his mouth and took one smack in the kisser.

'Canary' would be exactly right, except that 'weasel' still fits him better.

10. well ... he probably didn't call for Annan's resignation without WH
approval, so they put him out to pasture and now they've left him out to hang... those are BUSH family values for him...maybe he's learned something...but based on McCain's behavior during the elections and after they put him through the grinder during the 2000 it is possible that coleman has learned nothing!

11. Sounds like Norm got used by this administration.
He would not have taken this on unless it was scripted by the WH. I think this grandstanding by Norm came to an abrupt end with Danforth's declaration. Either the obvious UN support or perhaps the real story on the Oil For Food was going to get leaked. whatever, Norm just got kicked out of his bully pulpit....whatta fool.

18. Same game Bush played with the "Swifties"
Good cop, bad cop.

Bush still wants Annan out because Annan opposed his machismo unprovoked invasion of Iraq.

Norm's carrying water so Bush can pretend to take the high road.

19. Awww has poor Normie been double crossed?
Will he decide to start representing Minnesota now? Or, will he take the fall with quietly to show his masters how obedient he is?

Stay tuned for the next episode of "As the Weasel Turns".

21. The bush* administration can't afford...
...a high profile public investigation into the UN Oil For Food Program. Too many corrupt US Corporations are involved (See the Duelfer Report...the Uncensored version)

I imagine bush* and Normie started getting alot of angry phone calls from their Pioneers when the light started shining on Oil For Food.

Either that, or Kofi played a little hardball with bush* and told him to call off your dogs, or I open the books!

This attack was just to throw some more propaganda to the US public to reinforce their goal of destroying the UN. bush* just used Normie as the waterboy.

When this comes up in conversation, always assert the fact that according to the bush* commissioned Duelfer Report, the UN program of Sanctions and Inspections was 100% successful.
The Invasion of Iraq was completely unnecessary.

BTW: If my math and memory are correct, Rubberstamp Normie does not come up for re-election (ugh!)until 2008?
