Zack Space Signs Ethics Pledge Saying, "I Won't Be Bought" (Ney opponent)

Zack Space, the Dover Law Director and candidate for U.S. Congress, signed a pledge today that he will not accept dinners, gifts or junkets from lobbyists if elected to Congress this November. Space is running for the seat currently held by Republican Representative Bob Ney, who is closely linked to a criminal investigation into the lobbying practices of Jack Abramoff. Abramoff has already pleaded guilty to numerous charges including conspiracy to bribe public officials, tax evasion and mail fraud.

Space acknowledges that Ney has a right to defend himself against any criminal charges that may be filed against him, but also said that the cloud of corruption around Bob Ney has made it almost impossible for him to represent the district. Space said, "Enough is enough. Our district has been hit hard by the loss of manufacturing jobs. We need a congressman whose sole focus is fighting for our families and jobs."

Space also announced his support of a proposed 14 point Resolution that would expand House ethics rules to limit the influence of lobbyists, increase fiscal responsibility, and curb abuses of power in Washington. The resolution was introduced by a group of House Democrats in the wake of the current scandals plaguing Congress. In commenting on the proposal, Space stated, "This Resolution will put some badly needed teeth into the House Ethics process, and help re-instill public confidence in our elected Representatives. At a time when we need their leadership the most, members of Congress have proved all too willing to breach the trust that voters place in them."

The Resolution would help prohibit legislators from accepting illegal reimbursements for travel and lodging; bar former Congressmen from lobbying from the House floor; place reasonable restrictions on the time that a vote may remain open on the floor; and require that proposed legislation be made available to all House Members at least 24 hours prior to a vote. "In short," Space said, "this proposal would limit the political arm twisting that has become standard operating procedure in the House. It will deter the lavish junkets that have come to characterize our Congress, and help ensure that Representatives have the interests of their constituents at heart."
