Dayton Daily News endorses Turner
Sorry, there's no link yet to Sunday's editorial that gives the nod to Mike Turner over Jane Mitakides.

Editorial board cites his Armed Services Committee activity that has benefitted Wright-Pat as well as his appointment as chairman on a "working group" for cities.

The editorial concedes Mitakides' point that Turner is a company man -- "Still, of he's intent on showing political independence, it hasn't manifested itself yet." The biggest knock the DDN has against Mitakides is that she has never held elective office, and does not have Turner's Miami Valley connections.

It sounds like it's the old "it's-easier-just-to-endorse-the- incumbent" line. Jane does get an A for effort for being willing to take on Turner. But I really wish the editorial had also pointed out her platform as well.

Fingerhut will probably not do any better.

If you all care, I will post a link once one is available.

1. Yeah, I saw that.
Wondering what they're going to do about the White House race? Their reporters and Cox affiliate reporters have been doing some decent work on Bush*, and the above-the-fold story was a condensation of the New York Times front-pager about bad intelligence -- still, I bet they endorse Bush*. That'll be about the time Mr. Nownow probably cancels his subscription.

You know as well as I do, they generally endorse the incumbent, regardless of political affiliation -- it just happens most of them are Republicans.

Doubtless they'll endorse Voinovich. They always liked him, though they haven't been especially kind to Taft. They kicked the sh*t out of him, then endorsed him, too.

2. I was wondering that too, and honestly, I don't know
how they're going to land on the presidential endorsement. I think they could still go for Kerry, IF they take an honest look at how much this area has suffered economically under Bush. And when you get to the bottom line, that should be the issue.

We should probably have an answer to our question sometime within the next couple of weeks. Maybe they will correct the hard right turn they seem to have taken here of late.

Did you see the local story about one of the Cox sisters -- Anne -- knocking on doors for America Coming Together? Maybe she can channel the ghost of the Governor to knock some sense into the editorial board's heads.

3. Governor Cox is probably spinning in his grave ...
...considering how many Republcans the DDN has been endorsing lately.

I recalll papers like the Louisville Courier-Journal/Times and the Sacramento Bee, which really did have a Democratic/liberal op-ed position when it came to major political endorsements....the DDNs hangup with incumbent endorsements is pretty amazing...esp given Turners hard-right voting record.

The fact that this paper seems to be more pro-GOP (and is a pretty lame pape,, too) than Democrat is one reason I don't subscribe.

4. I worked there for many years...
...even did a stint on the editorial page (layout, editing, etc.). Sometimes what I read -- both in editorials and in their choice of letters to the editor -- just astounds me.

I've been away too long to offer any kind of explanation. I am eagerly awaiting the presidential endorsement. I hope it comes as early as next weekend, although I suspect it will probably be the week after. My head tells me Kerry...surely these people have seen Ohio's decline; but my gut is thinking Bush, because of the war. The war is going to be a mess no matter who takes over -- but the economy is fixable, and is an area where Bush has been an utter failure and does not deserve a second term.

Stay tuned.
