Ohio's Republican U.S. Senators Mike DeWine and George Voinovich have voiced their opposition to a proposed amendment to the state constitution to ban gay marriage.
The senators said although they oppose same-sex marriage, the amendment's current wording is "vague, ambiguous, and raises a thicket of questions."
The ballot measure reads: "Only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this state and its political subdivisions. This state and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance, or effect of marriage."
A spokesperson for DeWine said the senator fears the current wording of the measure could potentially hurt Ohio's competitiveness if state-funded universities, for example, were unable to provide benefits.
