Cinti Enquirer guest columnist Judge Black: why I will vote for Kerry
A Republican declares his independence

http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2004/10/13/editorial_blackguestopinion.html

When in the course of a lifetime, it becomes necessary for a born Republican to refuse to support the re-election of the party's incumbent president, to exercise his discretion, and in all good conscience, to vote for an opponent (even a Democrat), a decent respect to the opinions of his fellows requires that he declare the causes that impel him to switch.

send to SW Ohio Bush supporters ;)

1. this is so cool!
I have been talking to some of my son's teachers who are Rep. Women, young women, primarily, and although I am able to articulate my own views well, as a liberal and life-long Dem, I was in need of different arguments, from their home front, to engage them. This is exactly what I needed. And I have been hearing from Reps. as I canvass, and from friends of friends, that many Reps are feeling this way this year. This is very heartening.

Thanks! :)

2. How can your son's teachers live with No Child Left Behind?
That has turned a couple of teachers I know.

Also, the terrorist remarks about the NEA did it for a few others.

Do these teachers want to plan their families around their teaching schedules? What if they are not able to obtain birth control? The anti-abortion nuts have that as their ultimate goal: no contraceptives at all!

Do they ever see students who are raped? A few years ago, we had an eight year old here who was raped by her uncle. I don't know the age of her students, but would she want one of hers to be denied a morning after pill?

Teachers here are losing their jobs as industries and businesses leave the area. Many school districts are hurting. They are doing without many things. Ours just got rid of the social worker. How is your district doing?

Do they have student loans? Are they able to buy homes? Are their husbands out of a job? Do they have students whose parents are out of work?

3. I know, I know
that is why I am so confused. Part of it is that my son attends a small progressive private school where the crazy * rules don't really apply - and I know that they aren't making the big dough, either. But they had to encounter these concerns in their previous teaching, I would suspect. I have made it a point to talk to all of them about * terrible record for women... do you have a link to a site that runs down all those things? I need to print out some more stuff for them to read. I think it is that they don't know what it was like before Roe v Wade and the WOmen's movement. They also don't seem to be able to see the big picture.

I live in Pgh. but I am a psychologist and I work with agencies and schools a lot. I believe that they have had to close some schools and are losing students, but our whole area is in a fiscal crisis.
