but is this really a good idea. Views are mixed here. Will it be seen as offensive if we say that President Bush is making the same mistakes that led to the fall of the British Empire; making war on terrorism creates more terrorists.

2. yes it will....we do support the war on terror.... |
|
and are pretty patriotic and support our troops.
Folks here also don't see us as being an empire or particularly imperialistic, so the imperial analogy isnt a good one, or would sell.
People might be more concerned about how the war is going, about the outcome of Iraq...that maybe we didnt need to go in, or that its not really going after al-qauada.
I'll be honest, a "we're in this togther" approach might work better...the UK is a loyal ally and has sent troops together...so, maybe some news from the UK media (maybe a clipping from a british paper) on how the war wasnt really justified, and say that you feel you've been misled by both Blair and Bush....
...something like that.

I've sent a letter in those terms. I did make a distinction between ending terrorism and making war on terror. At the worst I doubt if I will have lost you more than one vote, but I hope it helped. I would be very interested if there is any feedback on how these letters are received. The Guardian claimes to have had 7,000 requests for addresses in the first 24 hours.
