A New York Times article on ACT in Ohio says that
Kerry got more votes than ACT was aiming for in the urban areas, but the distant suburbs (excurbs) had voter-turnouts over 75%, which made Bush victorious.

Do you think that voter turnout was that high in the exurbs?

Was there a chance for a Republican to see the list of registered-voters who hadn't voted by the evening and vote in place of people who hadn't shown up?

Is there a requirement to show ids in Ohio?

1. You don't have to show ID ...
... but your signature is supposed to match the one in the poll books.

resembeled the one on file?

6. You sign right next to...
a copy of your original signature in the book, so it's not hard for them to check. I always see them compare them at my precinct, but I always vote at the same precinct with the same poll workers, year after year. I don't know how thorough they are in other precincts.

7. That lets people copy the signature if they want to vote
twice and figure the real person won't show up.

5. I was a polling judge in Warren County...
The turn out in Mason, OH was high. Very repuke area and excurb in nature. Of the 615 voters who came in to vote at the precinct I was at only about 4-5 required ID. It was listed on the voter roll that we had to check their ID. I think these people had mail-in voter registration and their signatures were not on the voter rolls.

We did compare the signatures of each voter with the signature on the voter roll.

Of interest, there has to be an equal number of repukes and Democrats as judges at each precinct. The down side is the presiding judge at each precinct has to be of the same party that the people in the precinct voted for in the previous gubernatorial race.

It was also a very long day. We were at the precinct at 6:00 AM to 9:15 PM.

8. Thanks. How do you think the Republicans got so many
people to vote in Mason?

9. I was a poll worker in Upper Arlington
where I have worked for years. Yes, Virginia there are Democrats in Upper Arlington and more this year than before. Unfortunately, in the precinct where I worked we had about a 90% turnout (including absentee votes). Too many went into the booth with their "cheat sheets" with the elephant on them. So yes the burb turnout was very high. The difference was that with 834 registered voters we had 4 voting machines and they all worked! By 12:30 over 50% of the precinct had voted and the rest of the day was slower. Looking at the voter lists I would have to say that it would be very difficult to get much over 90% turnout because most of the names that were left on the list had either died or moved out of state. We are required to post a list of elegible voters at 6:30 when the polls open with an indication of who requested an absentee ballot. At 11:00 we have to post a second list showing everyone who has voted up to that time and again at 4:00. This is a carryover from the days when political parties checked and made sure all their supporters got to the polls. This year there were people from ACT checking our lists. We all do check signatures and we do not need to check ID's except in certain circumstances such as a voter who is unable to sign his name and must make an X instead. We only had 5 provisional voters and two of them were people who had requested absentee ballots and had not received them in spite of repeated phone calls.
