2. Follow The Election And Get Involved
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 12:21 PM by frazzle
There is a blog devoted to this race from the progressive point of view.

http://blog.oh02.com/

Once the June 14th primary takes place, we'll have a short 7 weeks to get the job done in this uphill battle.

We can't win if we don't try.

Race for Ohio's 2nd District heating up in candidate speeches, ads

CINCINNATI (AP) — The rhetoric among Republicans in the race for Ohio's 2nd Congressional District is becoming more venomous as candidates invoke past scandals and controversies to get a leg up on one another.

Attacks invoking bounced checks, raised taxes and marital troubles have been volleyed around in the last week among the highest profile Republicans in the district that has been in GOP hands for the last 30 years.

The negative campaigning ahead of the June 14 primary has revolved around three of the best funded and most well-known Republicans: Hamilton County Commissioner Pat DeWine, former U.S. Rep. Bob McEwen and former state Rep. Jean Schmidt.

DeWine's campaign last week began running television and radio spots attacking "Bouncin' Bob," a reference to 166 overdrafts McEwen had with the House bank in the 1980s...

6. Hackett is the man...
And I think he can appeal to the "red state" mindset down there, with his war record and all...

7. I Agree
Plus, he's right on the money on his positions (the ones I've heard). I think we could actually ride his coattails in the 2nd district when it comes to other races in Ohio. I seriously do.

Vote Hackett in the Democratic Primary. A Great American! :patriot:

8. Hoffmania Picks Hackett...donates $25.00
Goddamned GOP

Pardon the bluntness: These bastards. These lowlife bottom-feeding assholes.

Paul Hackett is a progressive running against Jean Schmidt in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District. Hackett's an Iraq combat vet which makes him a bigger-than-life threat against the Yellow Republicans.

Now that they're in the last week of campaigning (the election's August 8th), what are they doing? According to the OH-02 blog, they're Swift-Boating Hackett. That's right. These intolerant bastards are now trying to float the notion that Hackett didn't actually see any combat in Iraq.

Jesus. It's so predictable. They did it to Kerry. They did it to Cleland. They do it every day to the troops who are getting killed or maimed every day the war continues. They're now doing it to Hackett. They see any soldier who goes against their politics as fair game for character assassination.

Bush. Cheney. Schmidt. Every damned last one of them. Attacking our soldiers and veterans while sporting a giant yellow streak down their own damned backs.

Dogfight in Ohio
A Marine who fought in Fallujah is trying to become the first Iraq war vet to serve in Congress -- and give Democrats hope that Ohio is not permanently lost.

- - - - - - - - - - - -
By Bill Frogameni

July 26, 2005 | Paul Hackett remembers being in Kuwait, waiting to be shipped home after a seven-month tour of duty in Ramadi and Fallujah, watching CNN America with his fellow Marines. What he saw enraged him. "All I saw on TV was Terri Schiavo," he says. "The federal government and the Florida state government came screeching to a halt to intervene into the private lives of this family during this tragic time ... Like that scene out of 'Network,' I felt like the guy who stood in the spotlight and said, 'I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.'" Not long after he returned to Ohio, he decided to run for Congress.

Hackett, a 43-year-old personal injury lawyer and Marine Reserve major who volunteered for service in the Iraq war, has little prior political experience, only having served as a city councilman in a small town. But he's a contender in a special congressional election taking place in Ohio on Aug. 2 to fill the 2nd District seat vacated by Republican Rob Portman, who's now serving as the U.S. trade representative.

Hackett, a Democrat, is surely the underdog. The 2nd District, which includes Cincinnati, has been solidly conservative in a state that's thoroughly dominated by the GOP and that decided the 2004 election for President Bush. His better-funded opponent, Jean Schmidt, is well-connected and, as a former state representative, has a more extensive political résumé. But Hackett hopes his credentials -- Iraq war vet and plain-spoken self-described moderate -- will give him a much-needed edge.
