2. No, Bush named Portman for something else-
I can't believe I have forgotten what. This leaves the 2nd Congressional District open. The Repub are running a very weak candidate and Paul Hackett is GREAT. He just came back from serving in Iraq, he is very smart, CUTE, really nice...It is a summer election so we are hoping there won't be a big GOP turnout (they are all summering somewhere). We have real shot if we do a lot of hard work. If we win it will be the first Dem to win in 36 years.

6. Details
The Ohio 2nd race is a special election to replace Rob Portman who was appointed United States Trade Representative by President Bush.

The race is between Republican Jean Schmidt, who is currently head of Right to Life of Greater Cincinnati and Democrat Paul Hackett, a Marine just back from Iraq.

Ms. Schmidt is currently tied to several scandals and is only receiving luke warm support from Republicans in the district ("Everyone's third choice").

She is running on her strong support for President Bush (except on Social Security, surprise). She created a huge stir in their first debate by talking about her support for corporate "mega-farms". Some of her big issues include eliminating the death tax, tort reform, Bush's energy policy, and supporting the President on Iraq.

The bottom line is simple. We can win this. We couldn't have a stronger candidate and couldn't have picked a weaker candidate to run against

For up to the minute details on the race, check out my Ohio 2nd blog.

3. I will help
I live in the southern part of Ohio. There are NO signs around. I spotted ONE,but that's all. We need signs, leaflets or anything else to help expose him to the public. I never heard of him myself until we got a pamphlet in our mail from him. How can we expect people to vote for someone they never heard of? He needs to get his arse down here and campaign. Pike county is overwhelmed with repukes and their campaigns. It's sickening.

10. I heard some guys swapping lies about John Kerry yesterday.
I was at the pistol range and the owner was talking to one another customer. They were slanding his war record. I knew the owner was an R but I did not realize the exent to which he had chugged the kool-aid. He is a veteran himself and I found it distasteful that he would slander another vets' war record, especially when the Navy has no doubts.

I just donated $300 to Hackett as an expression of my disgust.

16. There is a need for phone banking
Over at a DailyKos Diary:

Make phone calls for Hackett

At my urging, Connecticut Citizens for Sound Government is organizing PHONE BANKING TO OHIO. We've made contact with the campaign and have an experienced local volunteer managing the effort. This should not be considered limited to CT folks, EVERYONE JOIN IN!

Check out http://ctcitizens.org for details. RSVP to ctcitzens@gmail.com and let us know you want to phone bank from home.

There's only 10 days left and this is a great opportunity for netroots from all over the country to get involved.

Politically, we're all congressional cousins. The actions of Reps from OH affect us all. Democrats are often criticized for leaving votes "on the table". Republicans win on turn-out all the time. Its time for Democrats to SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. This is how we can do it by banning together and getting organized nationally.

19. you bet !
this is the first time in many many years that the dem candidate is running TV ads in this district. My guess is that the national attention and the resulting support (funds & otherwise) had a lot to do with it.

Plus the candidate is quite strong.

One of the few times this area (don't know if it was this district) went for a dem was after watergate exposure.

Another DUer (chieftain) who lived in the area at the time mentioned it.

29. Cincinnati Post
Paul received the endorsement of the much lower circulation afternoon newspaper, the Cincinnati Post. I haven't seen an endorsement yet from the much larger Cincinnati Enquirer, but the Enquirer typically endorses Republicans. The Post's endorsements are more balanced.

Still, the Post endorsement is a great thing.

26. I just got polled...veddy interesting
Yesterday, I got a call asking for support for Hackett. Of course, it's my intention to do so, and nothing's going to change that unless I find out he eats babies or something...and even then, I'll wait for an explanation...anyway, I just got off the phone with a pollster asking me questions about how much exposure I've gotten with the media, what makes me likely to vote Hackett, why I'm turned off by Schmidt, and if I've been called or seen commercials for either.

I think the Schmidt campaign is getting ready for a smear effort, because the questions took an interesting turn. The pollster started asking, "if you knew the following about Hackett, would you be more/less likely to vote for him" questions. They asked stuff like, "hackett says he supports the environment, but owns stock in one of the most toxic companies in the nation" and "hackett says he supports small businesses, but wants to raise social security tax" and "hackett doesn't want to make bush's tax cuts permanent" and "hackett said the greatest danger to the country is the man in the white house" (to the last one, I said to the pollster, "that makes me want to marry him as well as vote for him!" - he didn't laugh, which is why I think it was hired by Schmidt--I am funny, dammit! :P ). At the end, I told 'em I was an independent leaning democrat, and very liberal in my views.

I contributed to the Hackett campaign a few weeks ago, but I'm also talking him up in the political hotbeds that are the various storytimes and playgroups I attend with my kids. ;)

I would let the blogger at www.oh02.com know about that.

It may not of even been with any campaign, just another GOP slime ball spreading bull crap again Hackett.

38. Thanks for that...I didn't know Push Polling happened
...I'm fairly new at this.

I'm reproducing my experience on my blog at Daily Kos, and I'll check my caller ID.

Like I said above, if they said the man ate babies, I'd be asking, "with or without salt, and I'm still voting for him" so none of what they said made any difference to me. :)

I'd gotten a live call from Hackett's campaign prior to the poll, and today I got a recorded message from Rob Portman endorsing Schmidt and tying her to *Bush.

33. out of state giving is OK
so long as you are a citizen of the United States. There is a limit each person can give. I'd have to check that, but I do know that its at the $200.00 contribution level that you name goes on a public list.

(almost makes me wish I could afford to donate more so that I could get on it.)

I plan to drive around democratic precincts with my car festooned with Hackett signs and remind likely democratic voters who may not even be aware there is aspecial election to vote D.

I did this for Kerry and got lost of positive affirmation. This will be even better for Hackett since the Rs may stay home because they assume Schmidt is going to win.

Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 09:32 AM by dArKeR
Hackett why doesn't he show pictures of Bush smiling and then show the dead soldiers of that day. It's a win-win for Hackett. Either Bush is sick. Smiling after learning of the dead Americans. Or Bush is completely incompentent and has no idea what's going on in Iraq.

Are Democratic handlers this stupid NOT to do this?
