Plea for help PAUL HACKETT CAMPAIGN from Louis Slaughter!
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 08:36 AM by Joanne98
I got this e-mail from her.

Dear Joanne98,

Next Tuesday there will be special election in Ohio to elect my next colleague in Congress. The Democrat, Paul Hackett, has done the impossible and made the race competitive.

You are receiving this email because you live within 400 miles of his district. By volunteering on Paul's campaign, you can play a crucial part in electing the first Iraq War veteran to Congress right in the heart of "Bush Country!" Can you round up some friends for a road trip to help out?

Last week I sent a fundraising email to our list and we were able to raise an impressive $4,500 for Paul's campaign for Congress in small contributions. All told, the online community has raised more than $350,000 for his campaign over the last two weeks.

What a difference those dollars have made. The National Republican Congressional Committee is obviously scared, because they've committed $500,000 to defeat Paul in the final days of a race that never should have been competitive.

Paul needs your help on the ground now if he is going to win. Insider polls show the race within 5 points... keep in mind no Republican has received less than 72% in this district since 1998. What a message we could send the White House if the first Iraq War veteran elected to Congress was a Democrat who opposed the war.

Paul is just the type of person I need by my side in Congress and I need your help to make sure he is victorious.

Please do your part by volunteering for his campaign over the next few days. Below you will find all the information you'll need to help Paul's campaign. I hope you are able to do your part.

Together we can start the wave that sweeps this country in 2006 and usher in a Democratic Congressional majority.

In Solidarity,

Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter

DFA is working hard with Paul Hackett. Proud of them.
Posting this because I was first of all surprised that people did not know that DNC was promoting Paul, he is on the front page. DFA is actively working with him, and I think they deserve a thumbs up.

On July 19, DFA sent out an action call for Paul Hackett.

Help Propel Hackett to Congress!
So far today, DFA activist across the country have donated nearly $40,000 to Paul Hackett's campaign for United States Congress in Ohio's 2nd District. By electing Hackett, we can win a victory for progressive values and give Iraq war veterans their first voice in Congress. This special election is an uphill battle, but it's a race we can win if we continue to give Hackett the resources he needs.

Wes Clark backing Hackett in Ohio CD2

I am writing to ask you to support a tremendous public servant and
fellow veteran Paul Hackett in Tuesday's special election for the 2nd
Congressional District of Ohio.

Paul Hackett is exactly the kind of strong leader we need in these
challenging times. He is a former Marine and a veteran of the Fallujah
campaign in Iraq. He understands what it will take to fight -- and win
-- the war on terror and keep America safe.

He also understands that our nation's greatest strength is found in the
talent and diversity of our people. That is why Paul believes it is so
important to invest in health care and in our schools, and to use our
tax dollars responsibly by ending corporate welfare and supporting
small businesses.

Above all, Paul offers the kind of fresh, pragmatic leadership that we
desperately need in Washington. For all of their bravado, the Bush
administration and Republicans in Congress seem fresh out of ideas
about how to win the war in Iraq and bring our troops home. As a Civil
Affairs officer in Iraq, Paul helped to rebuild Iraq and reach out to
the Iraqi people. His experience and judgment are exactly what we need
to finish the job we started in Iraq.

Paul Hackett is running in a special election that will take place on
August 2nd. Because turnout for special elections is often low, it is
absolutely critical to do everything we can to help Paul's supporters
get to the polls next Tuesday.

In a close election like this one, every person can make a difference.
With just one week until election day, here are two things you can do
to help Paul win on Tuesday:

1. If you can get to Cincinnati, please volunteer to help Paul’s
campaign by making phone calls or knocking on doors. Help his team get
out the vote on August 2nd.

2. Donate to his campaign. (http://www.actblue.com/list/hackett )

Make sure Paul and his campaign have the resources he needs to reach
out to each and every single voter.
Today, the Cincinnati Post endorsed Paul, calling him "a gust of fresh
air." Clearly, momentum is on our side. We can win this race, but to do
it we need your help. Paul Hackett has the experience and good judgment
we need in Congress. Please do what you can to help Paul win Ohio's 2nd
Congressional District next Tuesday.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Wes Clark

The Hackett for Congress campaign has released its first commercial: A Call to Service. Democrat Paul Hackett is running in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District's August 2nd special election to replace Rob Portman.

The Hackett for Congress campaign has stated that these ads will start running tomorrow.

A Call to Service - 60 Second Ad
A Call to Service - 30 Second Ad

You will need QuickTime to view these videos.

Hackett is a Marine who just returned from serving in Iraq. He volunteered to serve despite his objections to the war. His platform can be summed up by this statement he made in the first debate against his opponent Jean Schmidt:

I’m for limited government, I’m for fiscal responsibility, I’m for a strong national defense, and I’m for fair trade. What do these concepts stand for? That means I don’t need Washington to tell me how to live my personal live, or how to pray to my God. And I don’t need Washington to dictate to my wife the decisions that she makes with her doctor, any more than I need Washington to tell me which guns I can keep in my gun safe.

On Tuesday James Carville will be the featured speaker at a fundraiser for Hackett in Cincinnati.

To volunteer and learn more about Paul, check out his web site.
To get up to the minute information on the race, check out my Ohio 2nd Blog.
To help get these ads on the air, go to the campaign's Act Blue page.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1968959

Hackett is now an "honorary Texan"
Just got this from Richard Morrison

Dear Friends and Supporters:

I'm emailing you today to ask you to support a very exciting candidate, Marine Major and Democrat Paul Hackett who could be the first veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom to be elected to Congress. He fought in the Fallujah campaign, took part in reconstruction efforts and worked side-by-side with Iraqi military and civil personnel.

Yesterday several Texas bloggers declared Major Hackett an honorary Texan and launched a joint fund-raising effort. I've been busy with my law practice and didn't get a chance to join their call until today. However, it's not too late to contribute to the campaign -- there will be many bills coming due after the election and your money will be well spent. Please click here to contribute to Paul's campaign: http://actblue.com/list/honorarytexan?refcode=morrison

Paul Hackett knows what's really happening in Iraq. And, he's ready to take his experience to Washington. He's running in the August 2nd special election in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District stretching from just outside Cincinnati eastward along the Ohio River.

Paul's campaign has a tough fight against some of the most entrenched special interests in Ohio. His opponent, Jean Schmidt, is a favorite of the corrupt and ever-present Republican establishment -- one that never misses an opportunity to smear and cheat.

Fight on!

Neither is Schmidt, who has spent more than $200,000 of her own money in her campaign and has outraised Hackett by a 3-to-1 margin. "That money was for a condo in Florida," said Schmidt, the wife of a stockbroker with whom she has a 27-year-old daughter. "So we're not buying that condo now

I PROPOSE we alert newspapers from all over Ohio to send reporters to EACH AND EVERY BoE for these seven counties, just to make sure no funny bizness goes on like what happened in Warren County. It wouldn't hurt if we can get volunteers to hang out at the BoE's too, since some of the DEM BoE officials may be DINO's, too. Cam-corders would be a good idea.

15. Jean Schmidt corruption scandal
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 12:42 PM by Joanne98
Public Campaign Action Fund has revealed on their blog The Daily Delay that Jean Schmidt has recently received $10,000 from Tom Delay’s ARMPAC. Tom Delay and his fundraising committees are currently being investigated in Washington and in Texas for violations of ethics and campaign finance laws.
Apparently Schmidt not only learned from The Mother of All Ethics Violators, but accepts money from him as well. On October 25, 2004 Jean Schmidt accepted gifts from a pharmaceutical company while her opponent, Paul Hackett, was flying into Fallujah as a United States Marine Corps Major. Schmidt is now the subject of an Ohio Ethics Investigation.

http://www.swingstateproject.com/2005/07/oh-2_jean_schmi.php

Watchdog Group asks Schmidt to return Dirty Delay's money...

Schmidt, candidate in OH-02, urged to return DeLay's money

Jean Schmidt, the Republican candidate for the special election in Ohio's second congressional district (the seat was left vacant with Rob Portman's appointment to US Trade Representative), received two $5,000 contributions from Tom DeLay's ARMPAC on June 23rd and 27th, respectively.

With all the scandals in Ohio -- Bob Ney, Coingate, etc. -- do Ohioans want another representative whose in DeLay's pocket?

Today, we asked that question of Ms. Schmidt by urging her to return the $10,000 from DeLay's PAC. We sent out the following release to local reporters in the Cincinnati area:

Watchdog Group Urges Schmidt to Return $10,000 from Tom DeLay

Washington, DC – The non-partisan watchdog organization Public Campaign Action Fund urged congressional candidate Jean Schmidt to return two $5,000 donations from House Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s Americans for a Republican Majority Political Action Committee (ARMPAC) she received on June 23 and June 27.

Majority Leader DeLay’s fundraising and ethics scandals have captured national headlines since last year.

“Jean Schmidt should tell the voters of the second congressional district in Ohio that she will fight against the kind of pay-to-play politics embodied by Tom DeLay,” said David Donnelly, National Campaigns Director for Public Campaign Action Fund. “Washington has too many lobbyists, too much money, and too many members of Congress who are in the pocket of Tom DeLay. Schmidt should do the right thing and return the contributions.”

Public Campaign Action Fund compiled the DeLay Rankings (www.InDeLaysPocket.com) earlier this year, which ranks every member of Congress and how close they are to the scandal-plagued Majority Leader. Contributions from DeLay’s ARMPAC were a major factor of determining a member of Congress’s ranking.

Public Campaign Action Fund is a national nonpartisan organization dedicated to holding politicians accountable for the favors they provide to big money contributors, and to advancing comprehensive campaign finance reform at the state and national level.

—30—

We also urged residents of Ohio to sign a petition calling on Schmidt to return the contributions. Should a large number sign it, we'll consider some event in Cincinnati next week to deliver them to Ms. Schmidt. So, if you're from Ohio, sign away, or send to people you know in the Buckeye state.

Great thread over at the CCN about all that's going on on the ground out there in Ohio for the Hackett Campaign. People flew there, drove there, but got there for sure!

Included among the posts left on that thread was this one:

I write from Fallujah, Iraq. While not a Ohio resident, I feel the need towrite in support of Paul Hackett's bid for Congress -- the special eleciton to be held August 2. I worked with Paul in Fallujah over an intense three-month period, throughout a very difficult time - during and after U.S. Marine-led military operations in the city. He demonstrated the qualities of a real leader: brave, honest, conscientious and committed.

Washington needs to hear and benefit from more "ground truth" about Iraq -- and less posturing. Paul has Fallujah "street cred" when it comes to Iraq. Ohio and America deserve a representative in Congress who can help ensure that Iraq facts are presented in coming months, not spin.

Those of us still here, in the distant western Iraq deserts of Al Anbar Province and dangerous Sunni Triangle (including many Ohioans), would be well served by Paul Hackett in Congress. He would be able to hold Administration leaders accountable -- there has been far too little of that -- while we continue to work for success in Iraq.

I urge Ohio voters to give Paul the opportunity to continue to serve his country and Ohio, and in so doing, serve his fellow service members still in Iraq. We will be better off with him in Washington. The Iraq debate back home needs an Iraq war veteran's voice and perspective. Paul uniquely offers that.

Please feel free to pass this message on -- and don't forget to check out www.hackettforcongress.com

Sincerely,

John Kael Weston
