And in a three-way primary, Bennett concurs with almost everyone else that, "Right now, there is no question Ken Blackwell would win."
In his relentless digs at the opposition, Blackwell likes to say, "To be successful, it is clear the Republican nominee cannot be Taft-lite or Taft-like. In this race, Betty is Taft-lite and Jim is Taft-like. So the label Ken Blackwell has as the anti-Taft may have been considered to be an albatross three years ago, but is now considered to be a life raft."
As always, there's a bit of truth in Blackwell's clever insults. Of the three, he is clearly the least like the governor who now holds the job in name only. That's why - despite Blackwell's scary, far-right political positions - there's some sentiment within Republican ranks for allowing Blackwell to have the nomination. The reasoning of those Republicans goes something like this:
If Blackwell wins, we've miraculously retained the governorship. If he loses, who cares? We were probably going to get clobbered anyway, so it's best that Blackwell takes the terrible beating. Blackwell would surely be willing to take that chance. And the way it looks now, he just might get it.
