I live between Lancaster and Newark, and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for local or state politicians that are worth backing strongly. I haven't paid much attention to local and state politics, and I'd like to get into it more

I think it is an open seat. Terry was originally from Lorain. He was a journalist who was held hostage in Lebanon for several years back in the 1980s.
I googled his site a while ago. I hope you can help him. He seems like an earnest candidate.
