Petro Commercials
Am I going crazy, or are the political television commercial ads on way too early. I mean, dear God! The primary is not until May and the election is not until November. I will probably go crazy!

And the worst part of all, Petro is trying to look like a good guy instead of the criminal and scandalous individual he actually is!

1. Petro is desperate
to kill Blackwell's momentum. He's making a $1 million media buy to try and gain ground on Blackwell and to knock Montgomery out of the race.

Of course, if his adverts don't move the polls (and fund raising), he will have pissed away a million bucks way too early in the cycle.

This is just the beginning -- I hope the Republican bloodletting will provide maximum entertainment in the coming months.

5. Wonder if he's expecting to get a call from the grand jury?

3. Petro's foolish for doing this so soon
Edited on Wed Nov-16-05 04:59 PM by AngryOldDem
1) People are still sick of election ads a week after an election.

2) If he keeps this up over the course of a year, people will tune him (and his message) out. He also opens himself up for a LOT of attack ads that he won't be able to ignore as the primary gets closer. That's a distraction no one needs; why set yourself up that way?

3) Either he is rolling in the dough right now, or he is gambling a lot on starting his ad drive so early. Either way, I think he loses. I think spending ANY money right now is just plain stupid.

4) Whoever told Petro that this was a good idea is not working in his best interests.

I don't think I've ever seen an ad for a coming year's election broadcast so early. It's ridiculous and a huge waste of time, but I'm sure the TV stations aren't complaining.

I'd be curious to know the rationale behind this.

4. He'll get help from the news media
Plain Dealer will work overtime to promote Petro every day until the next election. He knows he's safe to run ads - he'll be protected. He's also taking pre-emtive steps to spin any connection he has to the Coingate scandal.

He's also probably trying to get Strickland and Coleman to start spending money against him, so their funds will dry up sooner. Petro will get all the free media he wants, but Strickland and Coleman will have to pay for theirs.

Its an impressive strategy, but he'll fail anyway because Ohio is sick of Repub crooks.

6. Petro's campaign hoped its ads would coincide with polling by gop Party
From this blog that I caught in a bottom-trawling net:

http://www.rightangleblog.blogspot.com/

Jim Petro's Real Plan for His Ads
Bob Paduchik, Petro's campaign chairman, explained: "We wanted to get a spirited debate going. It's an issues ad. It's not the traditional starting ad for the campaign."

Gene Pierce, Blackwell's campaign spokesman, said Petro's campaign probably hoped its TV ads would coincide with planned polling by the Ohio Republican Party.

"He's probably just trying to manipulate it for his own gain as opposed to an honest brokering," Pierce said. "A normal campaign would at least wait until after the first of the year and the holidays were over."

7. Interesting idea
I hope Dems pick it up and run with it.

Wonder when Petro is going to sue the Lucas Co. GOP for all their involvement and theft in Coingate?
