Philadelphia AFL-CIO to back Specter
The Phila. Council announced its plans to support the Republican senator's reelection bid.

Associated Press

The Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO, the region's largest labor organization, yesterday announced its support for Sen. Arlen Specter's reelection bid.

The executive board for the union's 200,000 regional members said they would recommend that the statewide federation support the senior Republican senator in Pennsylvania when the organization meets in August.

"We are confident in your candidacy and that you will continue to serve as a strong advocate for working families," union president Patrick Eiding said in a letter to Specter released yesterday.

1. Is he really that good for "working families?"
or is it a case of the AFL-CIO backing someone powerful? This was a prime pick up for us but labor is divided and some public democrats have announced their support for Specter--I'm thinking we are going to blow this one.

2. Specter is pretty moderate for a Republican
That, combined with the fact that Specter is probably going to get reelected with or without the union's support, makes this a wise choice for unions. Specter has played ball with them in the past, but if he is reelected without their support he may be less inclined to do so in the future.
