Does anyone remember a place in Altoona called
Alaskaland? They served ice cream, and had some type of signature dish involving massive amounts of ice cream, and if you could eat it all you got a prize or something?

Or have I gone completely around the bend? ;)

3. 'Going around the bend' in Altoona?
Is that some kind of railroad joke? :D

PS: I've never been to Altoona so I can't respond to your question...

7. Do not forget the Mule Shoe Curve, Horse Shoes Curve's brother.
The Mule Shoe (On the "New" Portage Railway, built c1856)

The Horse Shoe Curve (On the Pennsylvania "Main Line" Built c1854).

When these two lines were built they shared the Railroad line for about a mile out side Johnstown and than went there two different ways. The "New" Portage railway replaced the series of incline planes and railroads used on the "Old" Portage Railway built in 1834.

The Portage Railway (and the Pennsylvania Canal) was sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad in August 1857.

8. Yeah, okay.
But what about Alaskaland??? ;)

Having grown up near Johnstown, I'm surprised that I don't know that much about the Mule Shoe Curve. Hmmm...

9. Yesssss! I LOVED Alaskaland!
Remember those volcanoes of ice cream that they'd set on fire ... they'd turn off all the lights and beat a base drum and run all over the restaurant with the flaming volcano! In the days before there were a million ice cream places with a million different flavors, there was ALASKALAND! It used to have all sorts of animal traps and fake furs and other Alakaiana on the walls.

I LOVED it! It was a special trip of, if I recall, about 45 minutes by car for my friends and me -- we used to get groups of kids together, and someone's dad would take us there in a station wagon. Seems to me we'd get some sort of fake-nose-and-glasses-type-"favors" with our ice cream, and we'd wear them on the ride home and hang out the window and sing "The Name Game."

Anyway ... there was also an Alaskaland at a mall near Harrisburg that I went to a couple of times.

I miss Alaskaland!

10. Oh thank you!!!!
I was beginning to think I made the whole thing up!! It was an interesting place, wasn't it? I only went once, but I still remember the goofy volcanoes, and them running around the restaurant! May I ask where you grew up? My family was about an hour away from Altoona, between Ebensburg and Johnstown.
