Hoeffel tours all 67 counties
Funny business

If Joe Hoeffel doesn't unseat Arlen Specter in the fall U.S. Senate race, he should consider comedy. His stand-up - in which he wore a golden, Carnac-style turban and called himself Hoeffelini - brought down the house at the Stu Bykofsky Candidates Comedy Night, the annual pol-themed fund-raiser Thursday at Finnigan's Wake in Northern Liberties. (The beneficiary, the Variety Club, reported a take of more than $20,000.)

To Hoeffelini's answer, "Under 17 not admitted," was the question, "What sign caused President Bush to take 18 people to the movies?"

Hoeffelini's statement, "sourdough, baguette and Joe Hoeffel," elicited the command, "Name three white breads." Brrump, chish...

EAST STROUDSBURG — Democratic Congressman Joe Hoeffel promised Friday to work for balanced budgets and expansion of health insurance to more Americans if he wins his U.S. Senate race against incumbent Arlen Specter.

Hoeffel, during an appearance at Bustin Industrial Products in East Stroudsburg, portrayed himself as a candidate for change and linked Specter to the Bush administration's Iraqi war policies, "anti-environmental" actions and growing federal deficits.

"We were misled into war in Iraq with no plan to win the peace," Hoeffel told about 30 Democratic activists and a group of Bustin workers gathered on the factory floor. "There are Republican senators standing up to President Bush right now. But Arlen Specter is not among them. He has lost his voice, lost his vision."

The congressman from Montgomery County, near Philadelphia, urged residents to support the Kerry-Edwards Democratic presidential ticket, as well as his own Senate bid.

2. Joe Hoeffel stumps in Sullivan County
Joe Hoeffel stumps in Sullivan County
By: C.J. Marshall 08/16/2004

DUSHORE -- Democratic candidate Joe Hoeffel was on hand in Sullivan County on Sunday as part of his campaign tour across Pennsylvania to win a position in the U.S. Senate.

Hoeffel, who is a U.S. representative from Pennsylvania's 13th Congressional District in Montgomery County and Northeast Philadelphia, stopped at Putt's Pizza in Dushore to speak with supporters and give his views on why he is running against Sen. Arlen Specter in November.

"If you think the Bush-Cheney agenda is working for our state and county, then Arlen Specter is your man," Hoeffel explained in campaign literature he handed out at the gathering.

"Jobs is the biggest dominant issue we face in Pennsylvania," Hoeffel said when speaking directly to those who attended the event. "Jobs, health care and public education."

The candidate went on to say that too many jobs are going overseas to countries that pay slave wages to their workers. What he would like to see, Hoeffel said, was a change in the tax laws that would stop encouraging companies here from setting up operations outside the country.

3. Hoeffel swings through Selinsgrove
U.S. senatorial candidate swings through Valley
By G. Wayne Laepple

The Daily Item

SELINSGROVE — The big blue motor home rolled up in front of 208 Charles St. at 10 a.m. on the dot, and Congressman Joe Hoeffel bounded off.

"Hi, I’m Joe," he said, extending his hand to Davis Markle, son of Chris and Mary Markle. Davis was the first person Hoeffel greeted there on Sunday, but he wasn’t the last.

Hoeffel’s RV pulled up in front of the Markle home to give about 35 Snyder County Democrats a chance to meet him face-to-face. Hoeffel is the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held for 24 years by Republican Arlen Specter.

His stop in Selinsgrove was the second in the area on a bright Sunday morning. Earlier, more than 100 Union County Democratic boosters had been on hand in New Berlin to meet and greet Hoeffel at the home of John Showers. The candidate traveled to Danville and Bloomsburg later in the day.

4. Hoeffel to visit Wilkes-Barre today
Senate hopeful to visit W-B today
By Robert Kalinowski , Citizens' Voice Staff Writer 08/16/2004

Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate Joe Hoeffel will make a stop in Wilkes-Barre Monday morning.

He'll join Congressman Paul Kanjorski (D-11) and meet with supporters for a "Main Street" tour beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Public Square

He plans to visit businesses and speak with local residents in the downtown and eventually make his way to Abe's Hot Dogs on South Main Street.

"We are just going to talk with the people of Wilkes-Barre about the things on their minds," said Hoeffel spokesperson Kristin Carvell.

Carvell said local residents are encouraged to meet Hoeffel at Public Square and accompany him on his tour of the downtown.

"He wants to meet and speak with as many people as possible," said Carvell.

5. Joe Hoeffel: Rep. Building his rep
Rep. Building his rep
By BRIAN CALLAWAY
The Intelligencer

Joe Hoeffel was raised by Republican parents from the Midwest who held traditional values - pay your bills on time, keep yourself out of debt, keep your nose out of other people's business.
They finally wised up in their 80s and became Democrats, he said, after "realizing how far the Republicans were from those values."

But the Democrats still have them, he said, and he's hoping enough voters will agree that he's the best person to fight for those ideals in the U.S. Senate as he campaigns against incumbent GOP Sen. Arlen Specter.

"He has lost his voice, he has lost his vision," Hoeffel said of his opponent Friday. "In the Senate, Specter won't lead. In the Senate, I will."

Hoeffel will visit 67 Pa. counties in 18 days.
By Carrie Budoff
Inquirer Staff Writer

MILFORD, Pa. - U.S. Rep. Joseph M. Hoeffel found himself alone outside the Dimmick Inn & Steakhouse. He worked the restaurant porch in five minutes, learning quickly that half the diners came from out of state, and many of the rest didn't care to be bothered.

That meant Hoeffel, the Democrat challenging Republican U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, traveled to this northeastern town along the Delaware River to swing a dozen voters.

"We kind of ran out of tables," Hoeffel said, scanning the empty sidewalk for his campaign staff. He had expected more, but smiled, shrugged his shoulders and pressed ahead to the next stop on his 67-county, 18-day tour of Pennsylvania.

This is the most basic and unglamorous form of campaign politics - the county-by-county, up-at-dawn, late-night, sleep-depriving pursuit of votes. But it's all a necessity at this point for Hoeffel, a Montgomery County representative who remains largely unknown outside Southeastern Pennsylvania.

8. Hoeffel's 'Change' tour makes stop in Wilkes-Barre
Hoeffel's 'Change' tour makes stop in Wilkes-Barre

By Elizabeth Skrapits , Citizens' Voice Staff Writer 08/17/2004

When Congressman Joseph Hoeffel, D-13, paid a visit to downtown Wilkes-Barre Monday, it was hard to tell whether he was more impressed by what he saw or what he ate.

Hoeffel, who is challenging Republican incumbent Arlen Specter for his seat in the U.S. Senate, paid a visit downtown on day four of his 18-day, 67-county "Change is Gonna Come" tour, partly to talk about his plans and partly to get a hot dog at Abe's at 419 S. Main St.

We are going to get that change by walking down to Abe's and eating hot dogs," Hoeffel announced to the approximately 30 people gathered around him in Public Square. "Now, what the two have in common, I'm not sure, but you can't come to Wilkes-Barre without eating Abe's hot dogs."

Hoeffel walked down South Main Street flanked by fellow Congressman Paul Kanjorski, D-11, and Wilkes-Barre City Mayor Tom Leighton, with city Controller Bernie Mengeringhausen right behind. He stopped to shake hands with a pair of security guards from the U.S. Marshal's office at the Max Rosenn Courthouse.

9. Hoeffel speaks on health care issue
Hoeffel speaks on health care issue

DAVID BERNARD , Staff Writer 08/17/2004

COATESVILLE -- U.S. Rep. Joseph Hoeffel met with a group of Chester County residents Monday to discuss the state of the nation’s health care system and his party’s plans for its repair.

Health care reform is an issue, he noted, that is on many Pennsylvanians’ minds.

"I’m not talking to people about this. They’re talking to me about this," Hoeffel said.

The Montgomery County Democratic congressman who represents the 13th District is angling to unseat four-term incumbent U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., in November’s general election.

Monday afternoon’s "town meeting" at Coatesville’s Hutchinson Memorial AME Church was part of an 18-day campaign tour Hoeffel is taking through each of the state’s 67 counties.

State Rep. Joe Hoeffel continued his campaign to unseat incumbent U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., stopping in Washington County Saturday as part of his 18-day, 67-county "Change is Gonna Come" tour.

The Democratic hopeful appeared at the Washington County Agricultural Fair to talk with crowds about his "pocketbook issues," including jobs, health care and education.

"It's a great experience," said Hoeffel, who represented the 13th Congressional District in eastern Pennsylvania for the last six years. "Pennsylvanians are talking about their economic concerns, about jobs, about public schools and those are the issues that I think need to be addressed because the Bush-Cheney program isn't getting the job done."

11. Senate hopeful visits Franklin County
Senate hopeful visits during tour of state

By HEATHER McKIM
For Public Opinion

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The man who hopes to unseat U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter in November rolled into town Sunday on a bus with the slogan, "For a Future that Works."

U.S. Rep. Joe Hoeffel, a Democrat, visited Franklin County's Democratic headquarters downtown as part of his 18-day, 67-county "Change is Gonna Come" tour.

Hoeffel currently represents the 13th District in Montgomery County and northeast Philadelphia and is serving his third term in Congress. He's battling a long-time member of the senate in Specter, who is serving his fourth term and who defeated Republican challenger Pat Toomey in the April primary.

Sunday's stop allowed Hoeffel's supporters a chance to hear his views firsthand.

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - As a federal employee, Joe Hoeffel is eligible to have 80 percent of his health insurance paid by the taxpayers. And the congressman from Montgomery County believes that the people paying most of the bill should have the same health insurance choices he does.

Hoeffel, 53, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, came to Lancaster this morning to talk about reforming health care coverage. Speaking to 18 supporters and fellow Democratic candidates at the Neptune Diner, he promised to work for greater incentives for businesses to offer increasingly rare health insurance coverage.

“The reality is that we’ve got a health care crisis — with health insurance too expensive and unavailable to 20 percent of the electorate,” said Hoeffel, who is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Arlen Specter.

Hoeffel said he would offer a 50 percent tax break to businesses that offer health insurance to their employees. The effort would target small businesses, which employ the majority of Americans. Only about one-third of small businesses offer insurance, Hoeffel said. Small businesses now can write off 30 percent of health insurance costs as a deduction.

PITTSBURGH -- Congressman Joe Hoeffel wrapped up his 18-day, 67-county tour of Pennsylvania by walking through downtown Pittsburgh Monday.

Hoeffel is hoping the tour will help voters outside of his Philadelphia-area congressional district will remember his name in November when he challenges six-term U-S Senator Arlen Specter.

But getting voters to remember his face may have to wait.
