In another example of rancor at the Capitol, a leading Democrat reportedly screamed at Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll and told her she was "too old" to do her job.
Senate Republicans said Democratic leader Robert Mellow, frustrated by another legislative loss last week, told the 74-year-old Knoll, "You're incompetent! You're too old!" The outburst came after last week's debates on gambling legislation.
Speaking through aides, Mellow, 61, and Knoll, a fellow Democrat, denied that he made those remarks. But several senators and officials said they heard those words.
The same floor fight has already resulted in a public apology from Sen. Vince Fumo, D-Philadelphia. He called the Senate Republicans "faggots," and later apologized to the gay community for that remark.
