Max Cleland campaigns for Hoeffel
Friday, October 15, 2004

By Jeffrey Cohan, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland took a detour from John Kerry's presidential campaign trail yesterday to rally Westmoreland County Democrats behind the candidacy of U.S. Senate candidate Joe Hoeffel.

Cleland, a Georgian who introduced Kerry at the Democratic National Convention in July, warned the approximately 50 people at the Hoeffel fund-raiser yesterday that "our country is in deep trouble."

"We need new leadership nationally," he said. "That's what Joe Hoeffel is all about -- a new day, a new course for our foreign policy, a new day, a new course for our economy."

Hoeffel, a Democratic U.S. representative from Montgomery County who is running against four-term Republican incumbent Arlen Specter, distilled his campaign theme to one word yesterday: "change."
