More Job losses in PA
Loss of 340 jobs threatens town's fragile economy
Saturday, November 06, 2004

By Cindi Lash and Jim McKay, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The abrupt closing of the Anchor Glass Container Corp.'s bottle factory in South Connellsville, Fayette County, has devastated employees who jammed into the local fire hall yesterday crying and wringing their hands.

"This area is already in bad shape," said a sobbing Debbie Hinklie, 54, who found out Thursday evening before she reported to the night shift that her job of 36 years was gone.

Directors of Anchor Glass voted Thursday afternoon in Tampa, Fla., to close the plant, citing overcapacity, high shipping costs and other economic reasons.

A few hours later, shocked employees in South Connellsville were escorted from the huge complex that hugs the Youghiogheny River and dominates a significant stretch of the town that has made glass since 1911.

2. MUCH worse, skittles m'dear
THESE are "The Good Old Days".

Make no mistake.

And when Bush Business Partner Bin laden follows up with his next attack (now that it can only be politically beneficial to Tiberius Bunnypants*, expect it soon after January), Phase II of the tranformation to Totalitarian Tyranny will begin.

3. China House Furniture???
What really got me is that I live just outside what was the lumber capital of the USA - Williamsport, PA. Every year we hold the Little League World series here and our pride for our city and it's lumber heritage is quite prevalent.

Pennsylvania House Furniture has a factory in Lewsiburg, PA. A while back a friend of mine had to train her Chinese replacement, pack up her machine and do it cordially.

They should change their name to China House Furniture since it won't be made in Pennsylvania anymore.

Glenshaw Glass ordered closed

Troubled bottle maker to shut down Monday
Saturday, November 20, 2004

By Jim McKay and Joe Fahy, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A court-appointed trustee operating the troubled Glenshaw Glass Co. in Shaler has ordered the 109-year-old bottle maker to cease production on Monday.

Margaret Good, who was named receiver of the struggling glass maker earlier this month, said union officials at the plant, which employs about 220 workers, were notified yesterday.

A notice also was posted in the plant last night, she said. Workers will be sent letters informing them personally of the closure, she said.

Good, president of the Meridian Group, said the plant was being shut down in an orderly fashion in the hope that another buyer could be found. Manufacturing operations will cease, she said, and by Thanksgiving, only about 45 people, such as forklift operators and billing personnel, will be left.
