1. Yep, the 27th.

Specter seems to be ahead by 15 points, but that polling data is about 2 weeks old.

2. With * hosting a fundraiser for Specter
in Pittsburgh tonight, Toomey has no chance.

(But * has a chance of alienating a good percentage of the population of Pittsburgh. Unkle Karl didn't do himself any favors when he set *'s arrival at 5:00 PM, and when they closed off the Parkway and a good bit of Downtown at the height of Rush hour,

-snip-

Evening commuters can expect traffic delays once again when the Parkway West turns into Washington Beltway this evening after a weekend of visits from of DC dignitaries.
Motorists can expect rolling blockades on the Parkway West during evening rush hour as President Bush makes his way from Pittsburgh International Airport to a campaign rally for U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown.

Law enforcement officers routinely lock down the area around the president's route, blocking exit and entrance ramps and slowing or clearing traffic already on the highway.

Look out everyone, this snip is from one of Scaife's newspapers- it is probably endorsing Toomey)

3. I don't get it
Edited on Mon Apr-19-04 10:36 PM by anti_shrub
I know Toomey's probably the choice of the raw-meat freeper types but the conventional wisdom here is that Toomey has no chance against the Dem (which is why Shrubbie and Ricky the Wonder Dork are stumping hard for Specter).

Why would Scaife's rag endorse Toomey when his win would mess up the pubbie stranglehold on Congress?

4. Last week when Toomey was on Hardball
And was really asked hard questions, he looked like a fool. Tweety pressed him hard on abortion, and he stumbled bad, and said that he would arrest the Doctors, but not the women getting the abortion. He looked like a total idiot.

And I think the fact that Rendell is the Governer now has scared the repugs. We went from Tom Ridge to a Democrat, and Gore won this state in 2000.

5. I watched that edition of Hardball,
with Toomey. I totally agreed with you. He looked and sounded like a fool.

6. Scaife's politics
RMS is a very strange man. His politics jump from both sides of the spectrum, but, he is not unlike many others in his position. Scaife is more of a libertarian. He is pro-choice, so is Specter. But, his editorial page editor, Colin McNickel, is pretty hardcore conservative.

I guess the issue is, Scaife doesn't really care who wins. Either that or he really thinks Toomey wins.

God knows I want Toomey to win the primary. heheheh

9. Some conservatives are taking a calculated risk
If Specter is reelected, he will likely become chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. They are scared of having someone as liberal as Specter in that position have so much of a say over judicial appointments.

There are lot more vulrable Democratic seats this year than there are Republican ones, so there is a belief that the GOP could still maintain a majority even if they lose Specter's seat.

7. The race has been tightening up

Toomey has been rising in the polls. It will probably come down to turn-out.

8. The good thing about a Specter win
is that the conservatives may be so pissed off that they stay home for the general, meaning wins for Hoeffel and Kerry.

If Toomey wins, moderate Republicans won't like him, but will vote for their party's nominee no matter how right-wing he is. They would rather vote for a delusional fool than a liberal Democrat. That's the Republican party for you.
