Rendell reviews election procedures with county officials

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Gov. Ed Rendell met privately with county election officials on Wednesday to review new voting procedures being rolled out under federal and state election laws adopted following the 2000 presidential election recount fiasco in Florida.

Speaking with reporters before the two-hour meeting at the governor's residence, Rendell said he had requested it to ensure that the counties are ready to make the changes required by the federal Help America Vote Act.

The act, passed by Congress in 2002 in conjunction with related state legislation, was intended to make voting systems more secure and uniform across the country.

"We want to have as much care as possible that Pennsylvania doesn't become this year's Florida," Rendell said. "This is mostly 'an ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure.'"
