Attention State Convention delegates! |
|
If you want to be a delegate to the National Convention in Boston you have to file a statement of your candidacy with the state party. The filing period starts tomorrow, 4/21, and runs through 5/21. Download the formal statement from the state party here: http://www.txdemocrats.org/IssuesPlatforms/candstatement.pdfRead the instructions carefully and go for it!

I'll be going to state, but I can't afford the time off to Boston.

sent mine in yesterday. word to the wise: i heard from my friend in travis cty that there's a push for everyone to write in "John Kerry" as their candidate of choice to show party unity. so, even tho i voted for edwards & am going to state as a delegate for him, i wrote in kerry's name on the statement. :)

I. Pledged Senatorial District means you are a pledged (Kerry, Edwards, Dean, etc.) delegate to be elected out of your senatorial district caucus. This caucus happens after the convention recesses on Friday evening. Generally, this starts around 10 p.m. Friday. (Hopefully your senate district will finish its business before 4 a.m. Saturday! I have been in a caucus that lasted that long.) The delegate election will occur at the same time you elect state convention committee representatives, SDEC persons, presidential elector, etc.
II. Pledged Party/Elected Official: These are "superdelegates". Unless you are an office holder or member of the SDEC you don't need to worry about this one. Keep in mind that, at least in Texas, no superdelegates have been officially selected. The super D's will all come out as part of the nomination committee's report. The super D's have to have the form filed because they technically are 'elected' when the convention votes on the nomination committee report.
III. Pledged at-large delegates are the rest of the delegates that are not out of their senatorial district and not super delegates. They are delegates that come out as part of the nomination committee's report. This is the same report that includes names of super delegates. This is the hardest way to get out as a delegate as there are a relatively few number of delegate positions left to be filled after senate district delegates and super delegates are selected. If you don't make it out of your Senate district then your last chance is the nominations committee. Generally again, unless you're in organized labor, a member of Tejano Democrats (or whatever their latest incarnation is called), Rainbow Coalition or some other similar group, its all but impossible to get your name out on the nominations committee report as an at-large delegate. Nevertheless, you still want to check this box.
