I wasn't born here but all my family is from here and has been here for generations. It just so happens that for circumstances beyond my control at the time, my Texan parents were in Georgia when I was born.

14. I'm with you.I was born in Baltimore,a city I never again set eyes upon.
However,my earliest memories are of Houston, the city my parents were married in and my brother and sister were born in.Since Houston(I left when I was ten)I've lived all up and down the I-35 corridor:Temple,San Antonio(Schertz and Converse actually),Austin,Dallas and now Denton.
Fifth generation Texan,a great-great grandfather left Georgia one step ahead of the law right after the Civil War;a disgrace in most states,a badge of honor here.

Parents live in S.A.

Brother is in Lewisville.

35. Woodlands is very pretty, but very upscale, and
all that goes with that term. Deed restrictions are TOUGH, but that does keep the property values up too. I had a hard time learning my way around there... they are very restrictive on signs and things, so remembering landmarks is next to impossible. You can't see the grocery store or the strip center until you get to the driveway!LOL

I worked for Mitchell Energy when they "created" The Woodlands". Surely that's the only city in the US that was intentionally created by a corporation. It's weird to hear people talk about it like an ordinary town now.

i also recall when the woodlands was some kind of special paradise owned by george and cynthia!

i worked for mr. mitchell too, for a time - as did most everyone in galveston, but in his hospitality holdings. i don't think he ever forgave the island for not allowing gambling. the san luis was built for it!

i did see some a** kicking concerts at the woodlands pavillion tho. what a great venue that was - still is, i hope!

Lived there from 71-94. (with an unpleasant 3 year hiatus in SA during HS)

Went to Wooldridge Elementary, St. Louis Catholic (the big church on Burnet across from Northcross Mall), and Lanier HS for 2 years.

But I've found a wonderful group of county Democrats out here who give me hope. Solidarity, ya know?

It's much easier to be a liberal in liberal strongholds. Those of us who have to survive day to day in bastions of Freeperness and still keep a stiff upper lip have a strength of character that can't be matched.

Or something like that.

moved to Galveston when I was 5

Houston when I was 7

My dad was transferred by his company to New Orleans when I graduated from high school (Memorial class of '70) because he wouldn't give money to G.H.W. Bush when he ran for the senate (Daddy was a longtime Ralph Yarborough supporter)

moved back to Houston in '73

I've spent several years in Austin and at our place in Llano County near Enchanted Rock.

Right now I'm out of state again in Tumwater, WA, but headed home to Austin soon.

The house my grandfather built is off the main highway (you know where the freaky UFO guy lives?). It's down the road from that.

I forget the name of that road. Is it Mile 2? Mile 9? The huge Catholic church and the McDonald's are on one side of the highway...the house is on the other side.

78. How deep?
My mom and her brother went to high school there in the late 40s. The 2 other kids came through mid 50s to early 60s.

Ask your family if they ever knew any Rennscheidts. My uncle (the Black Sheep of the Family) is still living in the house.

My aunt used to have a farm across town, and my grandma lived in Leisure World for 14 years before she died. She worked the lunch counter at Harrington's for many years before it burned, and helped at the hospital before she died back in '94.

80. Very deep.....
Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 06:20 PM by SilasSoule
I have ten aunts and uncles who live there, all of which have many children themselvs giving me close to 100 cousins and 2nd cousins and such. All offspring from my maternal grandparents who were originally from Mission and had a house in Weslaco. My Uncle is the current mayor of the town. I only lived there until I was 5 when we moved to San Antonio, but I'm sure my family would know the Rennscheidts when I ask them.

Many of my male cousins gather every year in South Padre Island for a week of fishing, drinking and general revelry.

74. Silas me too
Weslaco, imagine that. I was only born there. Didn't live there. My parents were living in Elsa at the time and Weslaco had the only nearby hospital. That's how small Elsa was. Anyway didn't live in the RGV long at all, less than a year.

Austin is home now.

93. Lufkin. You still have to drive 20 miles in any direction for a beer.
(Lyle Lovett, Willis Alan Ramsey, and Alison Rogers)

You say you're not from Texas
Man as if I couldn't tell
You think you pull your boots on right
And wear your hat so well

So pardon me my laughter
'Cause I sure do understand
Even Moses got excited
When he saw the promised land

That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway

See I was born and raised in Texas
And it means so much to me
Though my girl comes from down in Georgia
We were up in Tennessee

And as we were driving down the highway
She asked me baby what's so great
How come you're always going on
About your Lone Star State

I said that's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway

Oh the road it looked so lovely
As she stood there on the side
And she grew smaller in my mirror
As I watched her wave goodbye

Those boys from Carolina
They sure enough could sing
But when they came on down to Texas
We all showed them how to swing

Now David's on the radio
And old Champ's still on the guitar
And Uncle Walt he's home with Heidi
Hiding in her loving arms

That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway

They're OK in Oklahoma
Up in Arkansas they're fair
But those old folks in Missouri
They don't even know you're there

But at a dance hall down in Texas
That's the finest place to be
The women they all look beautiful
And their men will buy your beer for free

And they'll say that's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway

That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway

So won't you let me help you Mister
Just pull your hat down the way I do
And buy your pants just a little longer
And next time somebody laughs at you

You just tell 'em you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway

That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway

76. former visitor
i spent several years in texas in and between houston and galveston. i thought i'd check in tho, since my son is a native texan. i believe that entitles him to texan-hood for life, even tho we left when he was 4.

and, tho i won't say i miss texas - the heat and the monster sized cockroaches nearly did me in - i will say that the area i lived in was wonderfully layed back, and after a "warm up" period, most everyone was welcoming toward my yankee self.

i do miss the food!!! i'd give up being a vegetarian for some of the great food available in texas - and i ain't talkin' wyatts cafeteria - i'm talking tex-mex, real mexican, and some of the greatest seafood ever! it makes me weak just thinking about it...

84. Born in San Angelo
Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 10:53 PM by texas1928
Grew up in Ballinger, went to college in Arlington, Met and married my wife in San Angelo, moved to San Diego, CA (that was a culture shock), transferred with my company to Lubbock. You can guess why we moved to CA. Job market fell off badly when Bush took office as governor.

And By the way both my grandfathers are spinning in their graves since Texas went republican.

87. Born in Santa Anna, Texas,
town in central Texas named for the predominant Comanche war chief who controlled 2/3 of the state from 1838-1849. Family came to Texas in the 1870's as unabashed Democrats and have been ever since!

90. Welcome to DU montieg!
I didn't know we had a Santa Anna, TX. That's really close to my last name. Damn I might be a Comanche huh? Who knows with my mixed lineage but either way it looks like I'd fit right in Santa Anna, TX.- 75% Hispanic/Latino
