Gov. Perry will sign legislation in church this Sunday
Cross-posted here and here by yours truly:

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Governor Rick Perry will sign two bills, one compelling a minor's parents' consent in writing before she can choose not to give birth and one which sets a public vote on the definition-of-marriage constitutional amendment.

He will do so this Sunday at Calvary Cathedral (a megachurch located in Fort Worth that has previously sponsored a speech by Oliver North).

More, including the FW S-T report by Bud Kennedy, at the links above.

2. At least he's overt about his views about church and state.
Yeesh. What a nutball. Signing bills in a church? Will the bills then be blessed by a priest or something?

He should be run out of office for this stunt.

6. I wish I could go.
Signing bills in church. What have we come to? Is he saving one bill to sign in a mosque? Or a synagogue? I wonder how members of that church would feel about that picture?

11. The Tarrant Co. Democratic Party is organizing
a rally at a park across the street from this church to call attention to Perry's failed leadership and misplaced priorities:

on edit: link was to ask for money, sorry, here is the email I received today about this:

TARRANT COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY Tell GOP Leaders - Three Strikes,
You’re Out! Sunday, June 5, 2005, 3:45 PM

Staging Area: Riverside Park in Fort Worth (Look for the big American
Flag) 501 Oakhurst Scenic Dr (off of I-35N & Yucca Ave)

The Purpose: Rick Perry left Texas children behind, but he will be in
Fort Worth this Sunday for a rally and photo opportunity, pandering to
his base and trying to scare off a primary challenge. After all, when
one can use a church as a film set and its people as props for a
political, who will ask him why 4.4 million Texas children remain shortchanged?
WE WILL!

Tarrant County Republican Chairwoman Pat Carlson said, “school finance
wasn't necessarily a priority of the conservative movement."-
Star-Telegram (5/31/05) Clearly, if it’s not in the right wing playbook, it’s
not a GOP priority – and now the Republican leadership has failed our
children for the third time!!! They called three special sessions to
redraw congressional lines for Tom DeLay, but when it came time to finance
our children’s schools, they have failed in 2003, 2004, and 2005. And
despite a court order to improve our schools, they even tried to pass a
costly private school voucher plan that would have drained more money
from our children’s schools. Our kids get three attempts to pass the TAKS
test - and if they fail, they can not advance. Perry, Craddick, and
Dewhurst have failed Texas children three times. They should be held them
to the same accountability standard they demand of our school children.
THREE CHANCES TO FUND SCHOOLS - THREE STRIKES, YOU’RE OUT! The Rally:
We will march beginning at 4:00 PM to the Cavalry Cathedral Academy at
1701 Oakhurst Scenic Dr, Fort Worth, TX 76111 to greet Governor Rick
Perry.

12. Texas Restoration Project
What's worse is that Gov. Perry and some of his staff (which include church leaders in Austin) were at a "Pastor's Policy Briefing" here last week. No press was allowed in.

There have been other organizations by this name (California Restoration Project, Ohio Restoration Project, Iowa Restoration Project). Most of them rise up, make their marks on the church-state landscape of the state and fade away.

If any of you come up with more info on this, let me know. Should be hitting papers soon.

16. Can't find downloadable enlistment form, but did find this
http://www.army.com/enlist/5steps.html

I think it may serve the purpose just fine to print out this page from the Army's web site regarding enlistment.

Hand it out to all who enter the church and ask them if they are willing to put their money where their mouth is.

18. Perry's gay ban signing is a PUBLIC event. Protest INSIDE the church!
Hey! This is a public event because he is signing a public law. You have EVERY right to be INSIDE the church with folded up signs that you can withdraw from underneath your shirt when he arrives.

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE THERE. USE IT!!!!

How about these signs:

RICK PERRY AND THE GOP
LET US PREY.

THE KKK SUPPORTS
GAY MARRIAGE BAN

Someone rent a priest costume, put on a cross, walk in and stand on the stage behind Perry. Pull out the sign GOD HATES FAGS. Or LET US PREY.

21. "As I recall, Jesus threw ..."
" ...the money changers out of the temple, and I wonder how long it will be before people of faith get fed up with opportunistic political campaigning in their houses of worship," said Kathy Miller, president of the Texas Freedom Network, whose mission is to counter what it calls the "radical right" in Texas.

They are now saying he's not signing the bills at a church, but at a "Christian academy". (Of course the school is next to the church, and the pastor for the church is attending.)

23. kicking to the top, also assembly for protest has been moved
to 2:45, same location.

I'll be there, fresh from church actually.

Think I will go to church, grab some lunch and head on over. I was considering wearing a Tshirt from one of the 4 hundred events my church has sponsored over the past 12 years I have been a member. (we don't do anything at First United Methodist without a TShirt.

A Vacation Bible School T Shirt ought to do it.
Or a Youth Choir Tour shirt
Or my official Sunday School Class shirt, with the skyline view of our church on it................

Perhaps there should be a very loud pro-theocracy demonstration outside. I doubt that many people would like the idea without a sugar coating.
