Wong and Edwards draw Democratic challengers
From the Texas Democrats Yahoo group listserv:

Ellen Cohen, President and CEO of the Houston Area Women's Center, will be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for State Representative, District 134, in 2006. This is the seat held by Republican Martha Wong, which includes large parts of Montrose and the highest number of pro-choice women in the state. Good news.

The board of the women's center voted to give Ms. Cohen a leave of absence from her duties from January 1 thru November 2006.

Boris Miles will be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for State Representative, District 146, versus longtime incumbent Al Edwards. This will be Miles' first foray into the electoral fray and it will be a tough one indeed as he will be going up against 26-year incumbent Edwards, also a member of the Democratic National Committee and a member of GOP Speaker Tom Craddick's team. Look for other candidates in this primary race in an overwhelmingly Democratic district.

2. Excellent news
Martha Wong definitely needs to go, and franking Al Edwards is an embarrassment to the Democratic party. Al can take his anti-sexy cheerleading crusade on the road in his spare time. Let's not forget that Al Edwards voted for HB3 against the needs of Texas children. And then there's that silly thing with the likeness of his face on the proposed statute at the capitol. I think we've had enough of Al Edwards.

Good luck to both Ellen Cohen and Boris Miles. We need fresh new representation and I thank them for getting involved.

Woo hoo!

Sonia

4. Terry Keel needs to be squashed like a roach too
We can never forgive him for his role in defeating the ethics bill this session.

5. I heard from a couple of sources that Keel might not run again.
He apparently has his eye on the Criminal Court of Appeals.

6. Whatever happens, we need to take that seat
Republicans should feel no more secure in Austin than they would in Fallujah.

7. I agree! With his name out of the way, our job will be a bit easier.
Travis County: A Republican-free zone!

The party at Barr Mansion was nice last night.
