Here we go!

Comptroller planning festive event to make 'major announcement.'

Carole Keeton Strayhorn
Political insiders say she intends to announce run against Perry.

Thursday, June 16, 2005

State Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn promised a "major" weekend announcement in sight of the Capitol amid expectations Wednesday she will challenge Rick Perry for governor next year.

A Strayhorn confidante and two political consultants in contact with advisers to Strayhorn said she intends to chase Perry in the March 7 Republican primary. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they didn't want retribution from Perry or Strayhorn for talking out of turn.

And the confidante said Strayhorn could still shift her sights.

4. I'll tell ya what...
.... she's a Republican but she'd make a better gov than Governor Goodhair and frankly I think she can beat him.

She is at the very least not a moron.

5. Agreed.

I will put her sign on my lawn... at least for the primary (and see how things shake out after that). My wife has written several letters to state officials regarding school financing (going back more than a year now). Strayhorn is the only one who responded, a type-written letter with several hand-written comments matching Strayhorn's signature at the bottom. Okay, she's still a Repub, but definitely better than Goodhair.

Perry's record as governor has been to repeatedly DO NOTHING while Rome (i.e., the public school system) has burned. My wife thinks this is a deliberate tactic; he wants to shut the public schools down this fall, followed by many people putting their kids in church schools which will lead to a boom in support of VOUCHERS! Remember where you heard if first folks.

Perry needs to be defeated; I hope Strayhorn can do it in the primary.

7. Perry's plan...

Strayhorn is a genuinely nice person; I've met her a few times here at the Pink Building. Perry - he's just a horse's ass.

As for Perry shutting down schools, it's certainly a political ploy, but not one leading to support for vouchers. He's hoping to help out his campaign for governor by shifting all of the blame for a failing public school fiance system onto the Legislature, but I think vetoing school finance budget is going to backfire for him.

11. Do we want that though?
I don't know which would be better- Bell facing Perry or Strayhorn. It's going to be a tough race for him either way, but Perry is so much more vulnerable. (I can't believe I'm about to post this, but here goes) Strayhorn has been fairly decent as Comptroller, at least has a competent image and reputation, and the worst baggage she has is her numerous marriages (which don't seem to matter when it's a repub). Do we want her to be Bell's opponent?

I said this in another thread too. I remember years ago when Kay Bailey was first running for a full term and the repubs played dirty and crossed over to vote in the Dem primary to help choose our candidate for us. From everything I saw in that race, republican voters helped put vanilla-lukewarm-bland-as-white-rice Fisher over the top, so that KBH faced him instead of Jim Maddox in the general. It was brilliant strategy by them, and perfectly legal so long as they didn't also vote in the repub primary. Should we do that in this race and support/vote for Perry in the repub primary?

I certainly don't know what the answer is, but I hope some people in Austin who are much smarter than I are thinking about it.

BTW- For what it's worth, I agree with your wife. :)

12. Perry is definitely the weaker candidate of the two.
I've thought about this problem, and I just don't know what to do. I'm not sure that Chris Bell has the reputation or statewide name recognition to win, regardless of whether or not he faces Perry or Strayhorn. The thing is that Perry might drive some folks from the R's into voting for Kinky. But what if he won, when some judicious primary crossover could have gotten rid of him at the beginning?

I'm just happy I don't have this problem -- I'm *running* the D primary in our precinct; I can't crossover. :P

6. Strayhorn started off as a Democrat
and I've always believed she changed parties only because it was politically expedient to do so, not because she had really changed ideologies. That doesn't excuse her, in my eyes, but if we're stuck with a Republican, I'd choose her over many others.

8. Most conservative Dems...
Most conservative Democrats have switched parties out of political expediency, even Perry.

she is not nearly as awful as Perry. I agree that we ought to enjoy the show, but it's hard not to root against Perry.

10. She's actually Carolyn McClellan ...
Her son is parrot head Scottie McClellan from those wonderful White House briefings. Let her fight it out with Goodhair but I would never want her as governor.

13. I actually went to school with Scott and Mark McClellan (and the other
nitwit McClellan brothers as yet undeployed to the front lines in the war against common people). The McClellan family's hearts are full of unwashed socks and their souls are full of gunk, but on they still fall short of the "I'm Rick Perry, bitch" mean spiritedness and untrammeled personal ambition we see in our current governor.
