Makeover ordered for bronze Juneteenth statue

A bronze Juneteenth statue that some lawmakers say resembles the chairman of the state Juneteenth Commission won't be gazing over the Texas Capitol's south lawn.

The Texas Juneteenth Cultural & Historical Emancipation Commission voted Wednesday to seek proposals for another version of "the Law Maker," one of five generic bronze figures meant to celebrate June 19, 1865, the day that Texas slaves learned that they had been freed two years earlier. The 12-foot original "Law Maker" -- said by some to look like Houston Rep. Al Edwards, the chairman of the commission and a longtime sponsor of legislation to honor the holiday -- will be sent to Galveston for permanent display.

Commission members said any resemblance to Edwards is a coincidence -- a case of mistaken identity, as it were -- and the original, already cast in bronze, needs to be replaced because it is out of proportion to the other four figures already cast and stored at a foundry.

Out of proportion. Are we sure Al didn't give the foundry the dimensions himself. And he sold his soul to Craddick for the price of his likeness on this statute. Too bad Al. It wasn't meant to be - you.
