Grand jury re-indicts two in corporate money case
Travis DA says it's a technical fix; defense says it reveals faulty indictment.

A Travis County grand jury on Thursday re-indicted two officials with Texans for a Republican Majority on money-laundering charges to fix language in last fall's original indictments.

A separate grand jury in September had accused John Colyandro and Jim Ellis of laundering $190,000 in corporate money through the Republican National Committee, which, in turn, donated money to GOP House candidates in Texas during the 2002 elections. State law generally prohibits corporate or union money from being spent on campaign activity.

The old indictments, however, referred to the check sent from Austin to Washington, D.C., while the new charges refer to the "funds" in the Texas political committee's bank accounts. The state's money-laundering law refers to funds, but does not specifically mention checks.

Glad to see Ronnie Earle is making sure he gets this case thoroughly reviewed. Remember the repuke defense last year was that "checks" weren't cash that could be laundered.

2. They're hoping to get off on a technicality
because the truth is not on their side.

3. It would be fun if they indicted those bill collectors, too
(Phone rings)

"Travis residence."

"Mr. Travis, this is Diversified Collection Agency acting on behalf of Sears. You have a delinquent balance of $350. Can we arrange a payment schedule for you?"

"Uh, hold on, uh - THAT'S right! Your company donated all that money to Tom DeLay and TRMPAC last year, right?"

"Uh, Mr. Travis..."

"AND, as it turns out, Sears ALSO donated a lot of money to DeLay and TRMPAC last year. You two know each other!"

"About that delinquent account..."

"Let me tell YOU about my delinquent account. Gasoline is twice as much as it was before Bush took office, our health insurance has been slashed, and my wife's job has been outsourced to someone in Bangladesh who only gets $10 a month because the CEO of her corporation decided he wanted FIVE living statues at his next mansion party instead of just THREE. So do me a favor, stay out of fucking politics so that the economy can recover, and I'll pay every damn cent of that account to square myself with you soulless freaks. Kisses!!"

(Hangs up phone)
